One could argue that Trump certainly is, if we are going by the pure words. He isn't really a Republican in many ways, and I'm sure his supporters would agree.

Going by this the general definition of RINO online, neither are.

I’m almost beginning to wonder if the uniparty has taken over so much of the Republican Party and it’s philosophies if being a RINO can actually be a good thing these days and describes the actual conservative and freedom based members of the party.

Label them however you want. Their biggest differences are on trade and war. Pretty similar everywhere else.

To me anyway, a RINO is defined, in part, by their collegial chumminess with today’s hold a knife behind their back while shaking your hand Left …. the Bushes, McCain, Romney, etc always come first to mind.

The Left actually is ok with RINOs because RINOs are largely go along to get along. They never offer real resistance when all the chips are down. RINOs can be managed if not outright controlled.

So in that respect, Trump is definitely not a RINO. So far, I’ve seen no indication that DeSantis craves to be liked by the Left establishment either.

While some of the diehards in each of their camps won't admit it, both would likely be considered "RINOs" when it comes down to it by deep South conservative folks.

Both Trump and DeSantis will, and have already, compromise and engage in "RINO" activities and deals in order to win the Presidency and/or re-election. At the level they are, it's just what folks like that have to do.

You're not going to win any higher level state-wide or nation-wide election going full on PoliBoard conservative 100% of the time. You'll never raise the necessary campaign funds to get your message out, and you'll never get the necessary votes.

Idealism vs Reality

That doesn't mean someone like Trump or DeSantis who has engaged in such RINOism can't be a good President or Governor and encourage individualism and free market job creating philosophies, but it's just what it is.

Trump doesn't like the word Woke because he believes no one really knows what it means. I feel the same way about RINO. It used to be a Republican who wasn't conservative. Now it means a Republican I don't like.

Ronald Reagan's conservative party is dead. I think The Bush's killed it. The move to populism is what it is. I don't like the Trump or the Bernie/AOC version of populism, but it is what drives the unwashed masses on both sides. Both sides want more and more and more government. Depressing.

How does Trump and DeSantis attack problems? Do they want to use more government or less government? Are they a statist or an anti-statist?

With Trump, it is always more government. He just proposed a program/solution to fix homelessness. IMO, not a federal government issue unless it only involves veterans. It should be a state issue.

With DeSantis we need to know more. I would bet he is a lot better than Trump.

Yeah but that's the old definition and there is a new one that only applies to Trump and Trump-adjacent pols/influences.

We don't know about War yet, either way. Trump was gifted 4 years without having to make too many decisions (and he did authorizing bombing in Syria b/c he had an emotional reaction to the meme of the child that the media spread). DeSantis hasn't been in office so we don't know what he'd do, clearly.

And DeSantis supports trade backed by Thomas Sowell, who described Trump's trade policies as a "disaster"

If you want to disagree with Thomas Sowell about economics, you do you.

The cult doesn't; they already "know" he's a necocon when it comes to foreign policy.

I've always said there are unknowns with DeSantis. Maybe he fills those gaps with things I like, maybe he doesn't. Just have to wait and see.
