In 1967 I was 19 years old and walked into the local hardware store and for $135 dollars I bought my Remington 742, a box of 30-06 shells and a gun case. I still have it today. No telling how many deer I’ve killed with that gun. It’s probably been at least 20 years since I hunted with it but I remember the last season it was used I shot it 6 times and killed 5 deer and a coyote. The gun is in pretty rough shape but it’s in my safe with instructions that it is never to be sold.

Have one I inherited from my dad. Pretty but not very accurate, tried everything including hand loads. 3-4" group and always a flyer in a 4 shot group. It sits in the case. Thought about looking to have the barrel recrowned just to see if that would help but probably not worth the $.

First rifle i ever owned, 1978. Killed lots of deer, never a jam. Still pull it out once or twice a year to hunt.

I'll be honest I am going to have to look at it to see what you are taking about. I haven't really fooled with it in 10+ years but will check it out. Thanks

IIRC it’s a 1 1/16

My dad has one, it started shooting bad. We shelved it for a decade and I discovered the loose nut while tinkering. killed a few pigs with it since.

I want a carbine but they’re rare.

I killed my first deer at 15 with that rifle. It was my FIL’s. He gave it to me when it became obvious that I was going to be around for a while. I’ve since killed 4-5 more with it and have no doubt it’ll do the job if/when I need it to.

You do know the nickname for the 742 was the Jam Master,,,just sayin

The jamming was due to poor cleaning and maintenance.

I have one, the bushmaster with a short barrel and no iron sights.

Got a 4x Redfield on it and have killed near 100 deer with it over the years, I love mine

Not that one, but I have the 740 in 30-06. I'm looking forward to getting another rifle though, it worries me in terms of accuracy. I have only shot it at a deer once, and it was accurate, but at the range at 100 it will be 4 inches off on occasion. And I don't want a semi. It's just cool that I killed a deer with the same gun my grandfather shot a bear with in the late 50s. These days I get all my action during muzzleloader season though because the rut is over by the time that is done.

Mine has been my deer rifle for over 40 years (I'm 56) killed dozens, if not over a hundred, deer with it. I have a $30 Walmarks Bushnell scope I bought in the early 90s on it and it still drives tacks to this day. Bought a new mag about the same time as the scope and that cleared up and jamming issue. I'm not a freak about cleaning weapons and it still hasn't jammed since the new mag.

Great weapon for deer, probably killed more deer than any other rifle. My son has one too.

If it doesn’t have see thru mounts, is it really a 742?

I have two 70s era 760s. The pump version of the 742.

I wouldn’t trade either one of them for nothing

Inherited one from my grandfather. It’s a 742 Woodmaster but back in the day everyone referred to it as the “hangmaster.”

Tons of people had those.
Known to jam sometimes.

They always took a backseat to the BAR of that era.

I have 2 of them. One a carbine and one a long. Very good hunting rifle. I have had zero issues with either of mine

They have been a staple deer rifle in Georgia for as long as I lived

It's a 742 Woodsmaster not Bushmaster

Look at google and you will see plenty without see through sites

I have one in 308. Killed hundreds with it. I didn’t get to shoot a couple because I tried to be quiet and slip that bolt closed instead of letting it fly. Didn’t go all the way into battery. You have to pull it back and just let go. It will slam into battery if you do it that way. Great gun.

I was always partial to the pump, but the 742/7400 are cool rifles. I've never shot one that was a tack driver by any stretch but they are fun to shoot. I never liked how you can't lock the bolt back without the clip inserted. I wish it worked more like most handguns where an empty clip would lock it back or you could push a lever up to lock it back. Minor gripe. They're a true classic southeastern deer rifle.
