I just received a Remington 742 30-06. It was my Granddad's rifle. The reviews online are not great. Does anyone have any experience with one?

I have this exact rifle. It was was uncle’s. I figure it is over 50 years old. I hunted with it for years and harvested many nice deer with it. I no longer deer hunt. Only waterfowl and upland game now. I had no problems at all with this rifle as long as you keep it clean. As you know, the bolt turns, so it can fail if not kept clean. So enjoy this family heirloom and safe hunting.

If you keep it clean it will kill deer. I have my dad's. I've killed 3 or 4 with it over the years.

Don't know about that one, but I inherited a Gamemaster Model 760 pump action from my Dad, made in the 1960's, and it is a damn fine rifle.
If nothing else, you have a piece of history and a family heirloom.

Killed plenty of deer and hogs with it. Called it jam master too, but honestly never had it jam or FTF.

A few in different calibers. The Ole jamomatic. They all shoot good enough to kill stuff with and are reliable if kept clean.

I have one. Used for 40 plus years, but not every year. Killed plenty of deer and hogs with it, never had it jam on me. Have had some people turn up their noses on it, but I’ve never had a problem.
It belonged to my dad.

It was my first deer rifle and one of the most popular at the time (1969)

The 742 alt 6 is a classic firearm. Take care of it and cherish the memory of your grandfather. I would absolutely dial it in and kill at least one deer with it , then put it away to hand down to the next generation.

Ive a Model 742 in a 243 win caliber. Still have it and use it. It's a deer harvester. My late grandfather was a gunsmith and he never used any fancy gun oil. He used atf/dextron transmission fluid and it's what i use to this day. Never had any gun of mine hang up using that pretty pink gun oil.

The old wood master 30-06
Got one from my grandfather too. I take a deer with it once a year but they have a bad reputation for jamming. My grandfather was marine sniper though and would break it down and clean it regularly before and after every season and as far as I know he never had an issue with it.

I killed a lot of deer with mine. Oil it but make sure to wipe away any residue or it will hang up

I have one chambered in .280. Casing gets jammed and extractor tears the lip. Still shoots true.

I appreciate all the comments. I am looking forward to using it this year. It is an honor having my Grand Dad"s rifle. On top of that we hunt land he and I were both raised on and goes back six generations in our family.

I also have one that was my fathers. Use it sometimes for the memories associated with it. They were bad to the bone, especially when we all dog hunted. Very hard to get any parts for though

I have that same rifle. I use it for primitive arms season since it’s a single shot.

I have one that is lightly used. I never had any problems, it works perfectly and is accurate.
One of the problems they have is that the bolt head will eat up the receiver because it is made of softer steel than the bolt. Once the rail is worn enough the bolt will jam itself and lock up. At that point it is a parts gun or wall hanger, but I've read where some close off the gas system and make it a straight pull single shot.
Most advise to shoot it very lightly and don't pound out hundreds of rounds at the range. Another route (I've done this) is to create some light loads that is easy on the action. Hornady makes a custom lite round but it is hard to find. The light load will make your 30-06 a little more like a 30-30 but it will still kill deer close in, it is more comfortable to shoot, and it will last.
This link probably has more than you want to know.
