Link?

Also, so this person never takes road trips? That’s a small world to exist in.

EVs weight much more than ICE vehicles of the same class. So an increase in road-use fees seem appropriate.

There’s tons of data on it, you can google it to find ut from your favorite source. I think the DOE research is like 80% are home charged. I have IE reports on Tesla specifically but I can’t exactly link that. But the numbers are about the same.

And no, we never road trip in her car. We take my GX or we fly.

Have you actually looked into this?

Going into effect September 1, the new electric vehicle tax is dedicated to the state highway fund, as is the 20-cent per gallon gas tax paid by owners of hybrids and gas-fueled vehicles.

It remains to be seen if EV owners will find the new tax fair seeing as the average owner of a gasoline-fueled vehicle pays roughly $130 in state gas taxes per year, according to average annual mileage and fuel economy data from the Federal Highway Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Is my math off? $200 is 1000 gallons of gas tax at $0.20 per gallon. At about 30 mpg, that's 30000 miles a year. How many people drive that much in a year? Maybe this is Texas' way of making up for all the years EV owners didn't pay their share of gasoline taxes that funds the state highway fund?

Exactly. The system is set up to use the gas tax to keep up the roads. Why should the regular folks have to subsidize those who use EV and don’t pay their share? The only real unfair component to those EV folks would be those who don’t drive the average yearly miles.

Average commuter car would pay less than 150 in gas taxes BTW.

EV weight is still well beneath the design limits of roads. A million cars that weigh 6,000 lbs will do about the same damage as a million cars that weigh 4,000 lbs. But just one vehicle that approaches or exceeds the road's limit will do more damage than a million lighter ones.

So what? The most popular ICE vehicles are heavy trucks and SUVs while the most popular EVs are all lighter sedans and small crossovers.

Most wear and tear on roads comes from over weighted shipping trucks anyway. Some dude in a Bolt EV or a Tesla Model 3 isn't doing much of anything to the roads.

Don’t think the average MPG is at 30 though.

The problem is $200 is in no way their fair share. The article states the average driver in Texas pays $88 a year in gas tax. How is it even remotely fair to charge EVs owners (most of whom only commute locally) more than double what your typical ICE vehicle owner pays?

What's even funnier is this kind of makes plug in hybrids the best way to get out of paying much of any kind of gas tax as they are exempt from this. So if the bulk of your driving is just tooling around in the city something like a Hybrid Pacifica or Prius Prime is going to pay almost nothing for road upkeep.

$200 is equivalent to 1,000 gallons of gas tax a year. 83 gallons of gas per month doesn’t seem all that punitive.

Wait......people were seriously believing that EV owners were going to indefinitely be exempt from paying road taxes despite the push to do away with ICE vehicles altogether? Smooth brains actually believed that?
