I have custodial accounts set up for my son and daughter. What would be your top 5 stocks to pick for kids? They each have three shares of Apple already. Looking to add a few more companies.

I would like companies they recognize or at least interested in what the companies do (ex. Apple, EA, Coca-Cola) to get them interested in investing. Also, companies with reasonable expectations of solid growth over the next 10-15 years.

No one knows. Seriously.
And that's what you should tell them for their first lesson on the markets.
Sure, buy some blue chips with a growing dividend just to "own a company". I'll suggest V (Visa), but in reality just buying SPY is probably the best thing to do.

Other than that, introduce them to Tasty Trade when they are young and they'll be teaching you shortly.

I set up an account for all my kids/grandkids. Put half in s&p500 etf, split other half between Nvdia and Apple. Trying to teach them to put most of the money in an index. Individual stocks help keep them interested. Same philosophy that works on me.

Plan to add some money to it in a year or so and revisit the choices.

I set my kid up with one that pays a monthly dividend, just because I thought it would be fun to hear how much she got paid each month.

When my kids were toddlers and I was in your situation right now I decided I'd buy them shares in companies that, 1) they would identify with or whose products they would use as they grew into school age and teenagers, and 2) would likely still be around for many years.

So, I bought them Coca-Cola (KO), Disney (Dis) and Exxon (XOM). It's been fun watching them talk about their "stocks" through the years. They still get excited when their dividends are paid and get reinvested and their shares increase.

However, I've always put the bulk of their "savings" accounts (about 95% of their portfolio) into a S&P500 Index mutual fund and re-invested the dividends.

bought a little here and there during the pandemic. Wish I'd have stuck with my principles and threw cash at it like I said I would.

GameStop (GME)

Then for extra bonus, DRS - teach them direct registration of stocks.

MMM might be a good long term buy. It is in a major dip and pays a nice divy.

Probably a hijack, but what is the deal with MMM? Just looked at a 1 year chart and it’s all downhill. 5 year chart is worse. Is this an opportunity to buy a beaten down semi-blue chip stock? Or are they in bad shape?

Lawsuits are a big part of the problem. Have owned MMM for 20 years and fell asleep at the wheel. Was a solid stock for a long time, but I should have exited. Will just ride it out now.
