I'm not a Tom hanks fan, but I tried to watch this movie last night. I got half way thru it....and then they had to push a transgender storyline in it. So sick of this crap.
I didn't finish it, but was the ending any good? I'm guessing he (tom hanks)turned nice and didn't kill himself?

Tried to go for the depressing end, the movie was just bland.

Spoilers…..

The big twist was that his wife was paralyzed and he was her caretaker, not sure if you got to that part.

Overall a pretty uninspiring movie

That is all Hollywood does these days is push the alphabet garbage. Except Super Mario of course. I think I will go see that movie again.

It’s based on a book and that character is just gay in the book. It’s been a while since I read it, but seems like that storyline had a much bigger part in the book than it did the movie.

As always, the book is a lot better. I thought the movie was heavy handed in the sadness, while I came away from the book with a more uplifting message of appreciating what you have and the people that surround you.

Even the original Swedish version that character was gay, so hollyweird had to one up them by making it trans

you know it's purely political propaganda when the trans guy could have been just a normal person and it wouldn't have changed the movie one bit.

but NOOOOOO

I very nearly turned it off at that point myself but didn't.
You didn't miss anything, it was so predictable Stevie Wonder could see it coming.

My wife got teary, but that’s the opposite of depressing to me. If I meet that end having been that positive a change for people around me, I know I’ve done well and honored my savior somewhat well.

I’m pretty anti-transgender movement as a whole but showing kindness in that instance for a homeless individual wouldn’t be acceptance. It’s just loving of that person.

I’m sure the above will get downvotes despite being a solely Republican/Libertarian voting person who hates all leftist/woke crap.

exactly, the point would have been made without the character being trans, or gay, or black, or handicapped... there was no reason to make it gay except for pushing an agenda

I don't know if it's just age or if he lost his mojo but I have no desire to see Tom Hanks anymore. At the height of his career he was arguably the most watchable movie star alive

I echo that strongly and only watched Otto because it was "on each of our lists" as a common point of interest and I was of the mindset that I didn't much care and would pull the plug if Hanks got to bothering me.

I love Tom Hanks as an actor but this movie sucked. It was just a shitty movie. The only reason I didn't turn it off was because certainly Tom Hanks wouldn't sign on to a piece of shite, certainly this movie makes a turnaround. But it doesn't make a turnaround. It just sucks. And with the added benefit of being depressing as frick.

The original move was British I think Man Called Ove?

So am I getting this right, an ordinary character has to be exactly like you or it is just pushing an agenda? Plenty of this is treated very heavy- handed by Hollywood no doubt, but all these types of people are just ordinary people out in the world. That is sort of the point.

Hologram for the king.

You’d think he was in the John Travolta stage of his career after that one.

I really enjoyed the movie. Sure it was predictable, but that's ok. Thought it ended on a positive note.

Such a cynical product-placement money grab that relies on crass sentimentality to sell you commodities and a comically simple viewpoint. The "all new Chevy Silverado EV" in the end is actually funny because by then the real motive is just shoved in your face. If you liked this movie, you are a gullible simpleton and what is wrong with this country.

Edited to add the product placement.

I couldn't have named a single 'product placement' from that movie off the top of my head.

Not even the Chevy Silverado at the end? That struck me as more of a commercial than a movie ending made all the worse because it was supposed to be poignant.

quote:

However, not even Treviño or Bayda can cut through the movie’s crass commercialism with its shameless Chevy product placements, explored in a sequence about Otto’s lifelong devotion to the brand, and capped by a finale that finds him upgrading to the latest model.

I wanted to cringe at the product placement, but the character in the book was fiercely loyal to Saab vehicles and was particular about who drive his Saab. So it made some sense.

Chevy was an odd choice though, and him teaching the girl how to drive a manual transmission Chevy Cruze was funny because Chevy doesn’t make those with a manual transmission.

I stopped watching in the middle of the film, which I practically never do.

Him kissing the girl in the restaurant and everyone there clapping pretty much summed up the film for me. Trite, sappy shite.
