I made it about 30 minutes in, then bailed.

Awful.

The original move was British I think Man Called Ove?

Both the original book and the first film adaptation of A Man Called Ove was Swedish.

That 2015 movie was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

So am I getting this right, an ordinary character has to be exactly like you or it is just pushing an agenda? Plenty of this is treated very heavy- handed by Hollywood no doubt, but all these types of people are just ordinary people out in the world. That is sort of the point.

Where in my post did I mention wokeness or agenda? That stuff is just the rotten cherry on top of this piece of shite.

We watched it Saturday night.
My choice based on comments from another thread (Tom hanks version of El camino).

I enjoyed it.
My wife hated it.

It is not a groundbreaking movie.
It has cartoon characters.
Sappy, predictable moments.

But it is a feel good movie.
I'm pro-life (against death penalty). And this movie sums up why. Anyone can leave a positive impact. Even a miserable POS.
It was a decent 2 hour (or however long it was) escape which is what a movie should be.

I’m pretty anti-transgender movement as a whole but showing kindness in that instance for a homeless individual wouldn’t be acceptance. It’s just loving of that person.

I’m sure the above will get downvotes despite being a solely Republican/Libertarian voting person who hates all leftist/woke crap.

I said the same. His wife showing kindness to a, what I would consider, confused kid and him doing the same was a non-event for me. My mom took in (distant)family strays that had far worse issues. I think showing kindness, 1-on-1 is fine, just don't normalize it or keep putting it in everyone's face as the norm. I have had many friends who did things I didn't agree with, but I gave my thoughts, and let them live their lives (and often they crashed with me, when they had nowhere to stay).

My wife got teary, but that’s the opposite of depressing to me. If I meet that end having been that positive a change for people around me, I know I’ve done well and honored my savior somewhat well.

It was crass mawkish cloying syrupy crap that was designed to appeal to gullible people. The main character being kind to a trans kid was a rare moment when it didn't seem overly sentimental. It was a two hour commercial.

If you're looking for depressing, just go straight to The Banshees of Inisherin. No tranny action there, just confusion and depression.

I guess I’m gullible because I liked it. Not a great movie, but good enough to spend 2 quiet hours on it.

Crass? What part?

Mawkish? Okay sure.

Cloying? Hmm probably a little

Syrupy? Yes somewhat

Romantics tend to see the world through emotional lenses. I’m not surprised in the least that many/most people aren’t appreciative of that sort of thing.

I thought it was ok until the tranny storyline of the kid with the bicycle.

I also couldn't finish it.

The parts that practically constituted a Chevy commercial. There was obvious product placement throughout. This was a money grab movie and it worked.

The neighbor Marisol is the only thing that redeemed this movie. Id give it a 7/10, very watchable if only once. The part where he bullied the truck driver was out of place.

Ford v. Chevy rivalry is a thing. Can products never be named in a movie without it being crass? They also named Toyota and Volkswagen btw.

So in the original movie, the character was just gay. Hollywood had to add the "trans"

This annoyed me the most. Every supporting character was exactly like a cartoon character, nothing believable about any of them.

It's like a dollar store version of Gran Torino.

Again, the woke shite didn't bother me at all, I expected it going in.

Also, can someone remind me what exactly the storyline is? An old widower is depressed and has interactions with neighbors. That's an ok premise for a movie, but what's the storyline? Is this what we can call situational drama? Like a sit-com, but sit-dram?

It was a take off of Gran Torino without the thuggery.

That is an overly simplified analysis. Ford vs. Ferrari was about two brands but did not try to sell you either. Go back on the first page and click on that link. The product placement was rather obvious in this movie.

The movie really failed to capture the tone and theme of the book. I finished the book with an uplifting message, but the ending of the movie was just sad. The storyline is a quirky man with unwavering love for his deceased wife is in such grief he tries repeatedly to Jill himself, but his pesky neighbors keep inadvertently thwarting his efforts. As the story goes on, he abandons killing himself and endears himself to his pesky neighbors as he realizes he has more to live for than devotion to his wife.

I finished the book with the feeling that you never know the impact you can have on others’ lives. I didn’t get that from the movie, at all.

The movie was mildly entertaining. The book was much better and did a good job of establishing the character of Ove. To be honest, I didn't really pay much attention to the trans part and it didn't throw me off the movie. It was just a so-so movie.
