What percent of students is fair and reasonable to fail a core high school course?

I would say 20% is a fair and reasonable percent of a high school teacher students to fail the course. I’m really specifically talking about core courses.
Especially considering out of that 20%, I would say half of them are failing all, or at least most, of their classes.

You fail all of them that can’t meet the standard of passing.
It is 10%, so be it.
If it’s 90%, so be it.

20% at my high school (in an affluent Atlanta suburb) would’ve caused parents to riot

This sentence that you wrote tells me you may have been in that 20% of English failures.
Also it's 2023. It's not fair that anyone fails at anything, EVER.

What % of the educational staff are incapable of passing the curriculum? Especially English?
We teach 12-14 years of English and yet no one knows much of anything about how to speak it properly, forget written English completely.

The teacher shall retest those students so that they don’t fail.

Won’t happen.
You forget that things like this cause hurt feelings.
It’s why standards are lowered and diversity is set in play.

Students in classes should compete for grades.
Students whose average is top 10% of class get an A.
Students whose average is top 11-20% of class get a B.
Students whose average is top 21-30% of class get a C.
Students whose average is top 31-40% of class get a D.
All others get an F.
All grades should be on 4.0 scale.

20% and the teacher should be fired.

Less than 5% in suburban schools. Less than 10% rural schools. 90% inner city schools.

High School as it is set up now is meant for the majority of society to obtain a high school diploma. The general standard would be +/- 2 standard deviations so 95.5% of students should make it through, as set up now.
I would love to see a variety of high school options designed to cater to different levels of intelligence and physical skills but we only get that will full privatization and deregulation of the education system.

This is why most states at one time adopted graduation exams and college require ACT and SAT scores. Different schools pass everyone along and they don’t know the course/work. But we all know those types of test are racist. There is not a standard from school to school. Most kids at Bonnabel that pass would fail at Jesuit back in the day.

20% is ridiculous. That's a failing school and something needs to change. Reasonable should be less than 5%.

Yea, I don't buy that 1-in-5 kids should be failing any high school class.

I teach 3 sections of a Remedial Math course in our school. 1 section has a 90% pass rate, one has an 80% pass rate, the other has a 40% pass rate. The 40% class is just the right collection of assholes that doesnt care. Ive tried everything and they just wont do anything. A few of them will likely scrape by by the skin of their teeth before the end of the year but ill fail as many of them show me they want to fail. is what it is.

Statistically standard deviation would say around 3%, but I think that's somewhat low. You really have to be a moron to fail a high school class these days.

This is going to vary greatly based upon the quality of the student population at the school. Schools should teach the same materials and have the same standards regardless of student population.

I can promise you in Huntsville City Schools, Bossier Parish, and Caddo Parish, if you have anything approaching a double digit non graduate rate, the principal will be fired.
These arbitrary rules really fricked the ghetto schools that I taught in because they had such a transitional population.

Are we talking like a lower level math class in HS? Anything beyond 3-5% would be unacceptable
