How many steals would these guys have in a season on that team? Could these guys steal 100 between them over a full season?
Crews
Thompson
Dugas
Kling
Tre Morgan

Kling should have 10-15 steals on the season and I wish we would PR more for Jobert or whoever is catching and Stevenson should have 5-10 as well.
I don't understand why we don't ever try to generate offense when we're stagnant. Some hit and runs, steals or the occasional bunt away from a shift.
Relying constantly on long balls and gap shots is a very dangerous game in the post season
Today was a golden opportunity to try and generate some offense but it seemed like we would get a guy on then strike out or pop out.
If we get into the losers bracket in Omaha (if we make it) we're frickED

They have 17 SB on the year. That is kinda laughable tbh. Crews should have 30 by now on his own.

Morgan is actually pretty slow now

The 2015 team hit 51 homers 2023 already has 90
The 2015 scored 451 runs 2024 already had 451 runs
Two entirely different teams in two different eras. Offense hasn’t been an issue.

As you know, I’ve been saying this all season. I can’t stand with baseball has become even at the professional ranks. I everybody is focused on runs per game until you get into the ALCS and you only score 1 run.
Great teams have great pitching. They also play above average defense. If anything, this team doesn’t have a great pitching Staff and has average two below average defense.
If you compare them to last year’s team, that team played pretty well defensively those last couple weekends. They also were able to piece together pitching in a way they got them through games. Ultimately, it wasn’t enough. This team has more than enough to get to Omaha. I just don’t think they have enough to win it.

I don’t think he is saying offense has been the issue. He’s saying that in games that we are struggling offensively and we know our pitching depth will be an issue, being aggressive on the base paths could help provide run support and put pressure on the opposing team.

Morgan had an infield single last night. He could steal 20 easily over a full season

The problem with this statement is scoring a bunch of runs and winning by six or eight so doesn’t always translate to close wins. This happened to the Yankees for the last seven years. They did crush teams during the regular season and then stall out when those teams that could pitch and do all of the small things were head to head. Do you know why the Astros won last year? Because they had exceptional starting pitching. And they had the best closer in baseball.
You have to be a threat to run. You have to be a threat to bunt. You have to put pressure on the defense every opportunity you get. While hitting home runs is awesome and that could put pressure on an offense to keep up, when there is good pitching it stifles all of that great power offense.

I’m not comparing the teams. The eras are different but that doesn’t mean this current team cannot add to the ways they win games.
After this weekend this is what these guys are hitting in SEC play
Jones .289
Morgan .287
Jobert .267
Milazzo .257
Thompson .253
Beloso .234
Dugas .197
Getting on base is great, which these guys do relatively well. But someone other than Crews or White will have to hit someone in.
Coach Johnson has been married to the 3R HR philosophy but it may be time to adjust that some. Especially after all the pitching injuries and poor defense showing it’s ugly head.

This thread sure as hell looks like it.

Certainly not.

Sure and they have been doing that.

We are scoring plenty of runs, but we can do better. But the OP was about stealing bases. Most of our guys aren’t base stealers. And we aren’t geared for small ball.
We are who we are and there aren’t going to be any big changes to an offense that had been scary good fior most of the season.

How many games have we struggled offensively?

Two this weekend (G1 and G3).

That kid can move. I feel much better with him in the outfield, too.

They could be. Crews & Morgan both ran as freshmen. Jordan Thompson is 12-15 career. Kling is a 6.5 runner.

Stealing some bases wouldn’t take a huge adjustment. Just allow the players be more aggressive and tap into what they are naturally built to do.
The offense as it is is not built to outhit the current pitching and defense.

That's a bit of a hyperbole. Stealing 20 bases is a lot. He stole 15 as a freshman but that was a different offense.
But I agree I wish we were more aggressive on the base paths. Unfortunately baserunning has become a liability under JJ

The ability to steal has nothing to do with the offense as a whole. 20 steals isn’t a ton when you have a .422 OBP and you walk more than you strikeout. Plenty of opportunities to do so

Ability? Sure. But necessity?
That team had a few good hitters in Morgan, Crews, Doughty, and Dugas and the rest was trash. They needed to manufacture offense and even still he only swiped 15. I'd be thrilled with those guys you mentioned each stealing around 10 this year. I think it would make us much more dangerous when the bats are cold and give another thing to make opposing pitchers think about.
But if Morgan is stealing 20 then Crews is stealing 20, and Kling and Thompson prob has 10-15 and then we just changed our entire offensive philosophy. I don't think we need to be that extreme

Kling was hurt and isn’t an every dsy starter. That’s a reach. To some extent Morgan is too. He had been hurt and he is noticeably heavier.
