I really think Phil has been great at doing Xbox ecosystem stuff, bringing in studios, but he has been an absolute disaster at being overseeing Xbox as a publisher. They obviously do not have the proper people in place to manager the projects, measure quality, measure timelines, etc. I think will will be out at Microsoft by the end of this year.

There's been a lot of...interesting conversations and misinterpretations since yesterday. About Phil Spencer, Xbox, the games industry in general. I think a lot of people still haven't come to terms that the 'console market' shifted dramatically 10 years ago.

quote:

The Xbox One generation was a massive setback for the Xbox brand. There's just no other way to put it. Phil literally said as much. And he's 100% right in that it was the worst gen to lose, because digital library continuity became a thing, and Sony cemented itself in that space.

quote:

The damage done by XB1 can't be stressed enough. To go from the 360 to being outsold 2 or 3:1 across the world was a disaster. Its later years saw meager major exclusives, while Sony continued to reign down must-play blockbuster AAAs, Japanese titles, and expert marketing.

quote:

That whole generation, players were flocking to the PlayStation ecosystem, with awesome first-party exclusives being the tip of the spear. That overwhelmingly strong competition led to Microsoft stopping, rethinking its strategy and coming up with Game Pass.

quote:

The competition spurred innovation. The trouncing that Nintendo got with Wii U, from its confusing messaging, cumbersome controller and on/off droughts of first party games led them to really iterate on the concept with Switch, and they corrected the first party drought.

quote:

Microsoft is, now, in a similar spot. It's not defeatist for Phil Spencer to acknowledge that they *can not* rise to the top of the console market. PlayStation has essentially become the cool-to-have Apple of gaming. Nintendo's too strong. These are impenetrable walls.

quote:

That's exactly why Microsoft is trying to go all in on "play anywhere you want on the devices you want", because reaching as many people as possible is their best chance: console/PC/cloud/subscriptions. They know they HAVE to adapt, or they won't last.

quote:

Phil's comment that great games won't change the CONSOLE market is true. Like I said, Sony is just too strong now. Even if Starfield is an 11/10, it will not change the stakes. Sony will continue pumping out AAA blockbusters too, and people's accounts are entrenched.

quote:

But, I do understand and agree with comments out there that...*consistent* great games over time does change the conversation, and pull in players towards your platform. We saw this with the latter years of PS3 + throughout PS4 from Sony's first parties.

quote:

Those are what pull people initially into your ecosystem - system sellers so to speak, and makes them loyal customers. That definitely has to change from Xbox's side, and it's why Microsoft went on shopping spree and acquired some 15 studios in the last several years.

quote:

Xbox needs those experiences unique to its ecosystem so it stands out and can offer something others don't, so it attracts players from other ecosystems, or all-new players. That's the big gap they *need* to shore up. Sony recognized its gap with GAAS, hence its expansion there.

quote:

Shifting your focus and priority when you see that you are down isn't giving up. It's understanding that you can't grow by doing what you've been doing. Nintendo recognized this with the Gamecube and pivoted to do its own thing with the Wii, leading to some of its best years.

quote:

The PS2/Xbox/GC generation saw Sony absolutely decimate the competition with the PS2, which in turn led to a refocused Microsoft that delivered arguably one of the best consoles ever made in Xbox 360, full of amazing exclusives, great Japanese support, and killer apps.

quote:

We need to have a very strong Xbox, because that competition is what keeps others on their toes to not be complacent and continue to deliver the best they can for their players. Riding the coattails of the PS2 led to us getting the PS3 after all. A rough start.

quote:

I've actually seen a lot of off-base takes since yesterday, some laughing, mocking and even hoping for Xbox to just disappear, and vice versa in the past with Sony. It's weird. You should WANT a healthy Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo, because the success of one pushes the others.

quote:

Anyway, all I'm saying is let's not kick someone when they're down. I want Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo to all do well, because that's what gave us the Switch, that's what gave us PlayStation's fantastic first party teams, that's what gave us Game Pass. Let's root for all of them!

Phil hasn't been flawless (who is) but you can't overstate the damage the previous 2 regimes created ("if you want to play offline, there's the 360"). He's been on damage control for a while and is is trying to navigate with messaging they were essentially forced to go with.

Instead of getting their own IPs in order, they’d rather buy up more and potentially ruin those, too.

Xbox is really going to ruin things. Why can’t they just make good exclusives of their own and sell them at a price they are worth…vs whoring them out on Dollar General game pass?

I’m not mad they got CoD because CoD sucks at this point and they can burn it to the ground all they want.

But I’m afraid of what else they may get their greedy paws on and destroy.

Their greed and inability to produce good exclusives is a threat to console gaming.

Boycott now.

Pretty much. Look at what they allowed the executives at 343 to do to the halo franchise for 10 years

Right?

Utterly destroyed the best thing going for the system.

The fall from grace after the 360 is one of the crazier failures I have witnessed. Especially considering how god awful the PS3 was.

They had their chance. Then they gave us the Xbox one lol.

PlayStation doesn't have nearly enough exclusives to overcome the value of Game Pass.

“Straight to game pass” is the gaming version of “straight to DVD”. Sure there might be a hit once a year (Microsoft paid Sony a pretty penny for The Show) but everything else is garbage.

I cannot believe that real actual people still advocate and argue on behalf of xbox. They are more delusional than the worst SJW soy cuck you could pluck off a random Cali street.

To speak to the idiots actual post, it isnt even really about the ps exclusives being "good" or not (in your eyes). I add the enclosed at the end because most of them are actually good to great and arent fricked to all hell on launch.

It is really more about Playstation/Sony slowly and consistently building the brand of what a Sony 1st party game is. They all have some of the same sort of DNA and you know what youre going to get for the most part. They also contract mostly exclusive 1-2 year games from high profile popular 2nd and 3rd party like Square Enix.

Game pass was a good idea and wonderful innovation by Xbox they just stopped there.

Well, based off how crappy MSFT is, Sony should be OK with the Activision merger.

At least this thread is good to corral all you haters.

Literally all MSFT has since they can’t do anything else right

Can’t wait to see how they ruin it.

I’d be shocked if they’re still competing in the console market 20 years from now.

Man you say you don’t like getting into console wars but yet here you are continuously bitching about and dogging Xbox. It honestly sounds like you are begging to get into a shouting match with the Xbox crowd.

If you ask me neither the Xbox or the PS5 is overly impressive. Both consoles definitely have their flaws.

It's pretty hilarious. Game Pass has been amazing and will only continue to be amazing. It's clear some of these folks have never used it.

I gave an honest attempt at Redfall. The graphics didn't bother me, but the controls were quirky at best. After going through the opening missions, I finally got out to explore the world, and the first fricking safehouse you find is locked. I had to power on a generator to open it, great now how do I power this shite on? I look around and all I find is a locked garage, Ok how the frick do I open this garage? I died trying to figure out how to get into this safehouse, and then it started over from the beginning. I said frick this and deleted the game.

Game Pass is decent. I like it because I find games that I haven't had chance to buy like AC Odyssey. But that's not enough to win over PS gamers. Microsoft needs to put out quality exclusives on day one if they want to beat Sony. Redfall isn't it. They really do need Starfield to be a masterpiece.

Right now I'm playing Plagues Tale Requiem, Forza Horizon 5, Halo Infinite, and Dishonored Death of the Outsider on Game Pass. All really good games. If you are the type of gamer that doesnt have to play the latest and greatest at the moment then its a great service.

It feels like the Xbox 360 was literally the first video game console for 75% of the people who post on this board and Halo 3 was literally some kind of life changing experience for them.

It's the only explanation for the level of Xbox bias on this board

Defiantly not considering all the AC games come with premium.

I've been playing Lego Skywalker Saga this week because I'm trying to keep my plate clean for Tears of the Kingdom.

But man I have played a ton of games solely because of Game Pass. I just can't overstate the value I've derived from this. It would take me all day to compile a list of every game I've played because of Game Pass.

On top of that, I never have to buy crappy kids games for my kids because of all of the kids games on there. It's worth the price of admission just to not have to shell out for Minecraft, the Peppa Pig game, Slime Rancher 1 and 2, all of those Disney exploration games, etc. They could double the price, and I'd still be coming out ahead here.

We've gotten to the point of the whole "release a half finished game, then patch it" era where a quarter or more of the games are awful at launch, then once they are fixed and actually pretty good they've already missed their moment.

I think the beauty of gamepass is that you can release something essentially instantly. Let studios have as much time as they need to get it right, hype it for a few months and then drop it.
