In 1st-of-its-kind drill, US Army operators train to defend Taiwan against Chinese attack

•At US Army Special Operations Command's annual capabilities exercise, soldiers trained to defend Taiwan.
•It was the first Taiwan scenario in the exercise, with a concrete mock-up representing the island.
•Soldiers mixed tactics and weapons used in the war on terror with other tools, illustrating the focus on China.
quote:
FORT BRAGG, North Carolina — Members of the US Army's Special Operations Command fired Carl Gustaf recoilless rifles, breached tunnels and operated Switchblade drones that flew with an unsettling whiz over a training area on Thursday.
The exercise combined some of the hallmark tactics and weapons that were used during the Global War on Terror with other tools reflecting a seismic shift for the command as it prepares for potential conflict against major military rivals.
The training was part of the USASOC's annual capabilities exercise, or CAPEX, and the mission they were gaming out was an insertion into Taiwan to defend against a Chinese invasion.
It was the first-ever use of a Taiwan scenario for the exercise, with a concrete mock-up meant to represent that country. So instead of hovering 8,000 miles away in the South China Sea where the island actually is perched, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment's Chinooks landed on Range 68 at Fort Bragg.
quote:
"The [People's Republic of China], in accordance with our national defense strategy, is our true pacing challenge out there," Lt. Gen. Jonathan P. Braga, commanding general of USASOC, said in a speech ahead of the exercise.
"Ultimately, what we are trying to do is prevent World War III," he said. "That's our job."

I’m super glad we are broadcasting it to the world

Yes, but will be sending a diverse group of soldiers to fight on foreign soil? We need equity.

Govt probably slowly breaking the inevitable to the public.

I’m sure they already knew about it with our level of security and their level of spying. This was probably released to comfort people.

I'm sure General Miley already called Xi and got his approval.

Do you really defend Taiwan without putting troops there now? It seems like if China goes hard and fast they can easily take the island. It seems like the real fight would be trying to re-take the island?

I bet you think obscured police vehicles deter speeding.

Didn't they rename Fort Bragg to Fort Tranny or something?

But how will the Taiwanese fair against microaggressions . Those are more dangerous than bullets

Clearly this was put out there on purpose.
If you believe this is the first time we’ve drilled for defending Taiwan then you are naive, certainly the Chinese are not foolish enough to believe that. Airing it publicly is posturing, for better or worse.

That's sort of what I'm thinking too. Seems like a dumb move and a potential waste/sacrifice of soldiers to send them there to defend. But I'm not much of a military strategist.

With what navy? They don’t have the landing craft and Taiwans coastline isn’t the most accessible. They could use paratroopers but I’m not sure you take a first world country that way. They want to take Taiwan while doing as little damage to industry as possible.

Please don’t tell me that idiot Biden is going to get us involved in another war. Have we learned nothing from Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, and now, Ukraine? Billions spent on a folly that enriches a few politicians and costs taxpayers billions of dollars, not to mention lives.
Who, in the name of all that is holy, gives a f*** about Taiwan.

We have so many SOF forces now that most of them just perform traditional infantry rolls I guess

It certainly seems like the trajectory is heading towards another foreign war. Hopefully, that doesn't happen. I'm not sure how well humanity will fare in a ww3 scenario with the powerful weapons we have. And since we've already demonstrated how nukes can essentially end a war, no one will want to be the 2nd country to launch them.
I'm not one to get into all the fear porn, but it seems like if not a hot war, at the least we have another cold war seemingly on the brink.

Which is sad, because Taiwan truly is a beautiful country with amazing people
