Suicides jumped 29% among adolescents ages 15 to 19 over the previous decade, according to a report released Wednesday.

Adolescent suicides rose from 8.4 per 100,000 during the 2012-2014 timeframe to 10.8 deaths per 100,000 in 2018-2020, according to the new edition of America's Health Rankings Health of Women and Children Reportopens in a new tab or window from the United Health Foundation. Adolescent suicides also rose significantly in 10 states. The report captures 121 health measures based on the most recently available public health data from 30 different sources.

Over the past month or so, I know 2 different families who lost a teenage child to suicide. As a guy with kids of my own, their grief is unfathomable to me. It's tough to find the words when talking to these people, trying to somehow process such a soul crushing loss. Just a terrible, terrible thing to go through.

You hear various reasons for the increases.. The fact that we as human beings are now inundated with a constant barrage of information that never ends. Not to mention the rigors of teenage life now being paired with this ability to document every waking second of their lives.

But frick man. What are we doing to ourselves? How do we stop it? I feel so awful for these people and my prayers go out to them constantly, but my biggest fears are now having to possibly one day walk in their shoes.

Make God the center of your life.

Throw Away your television.

Severely limit social media time and make sure to talk to your kids about the forced perspective, feedback loops, and focused lens that social media tricks you into believing is real.

Take an active role in your child's life. Never assume they're fine. Ask them how theyre doing. and take what they say seriously.

Go outside.

I know there is a lot of pressure on these youngsters at school and at home.

A lot more than in my youth.

Not sure what administrators and parents can do. But awareness and compassion are needed sometimes.

I can't imagine how devastated the parents, families and friends must be.

When I was in high school, when you didn’t get invited to a party chances are you never found out. Now these frickers blast every second all over social media. You do something dumb….bam social media. They only see people’s highlight reels and feel like that is real life. It’s depressing as hell. I think social media is the reason.

Social. fricking. Media.

NIH already looked at many studies, some of which are ten years old and have repeatedly reported things like this:

quote:

Many researchers have postulated that worsening mental health attributed to social media use may be because social media replaces face-to-face interactions for young people (Twenge & Campbell, 2018), and may contribute to greater loneliness (Bucci et al., 2019), and negative effects on other aspects of health and wellbeing (Woods & Scott, 2016). One nationally representative survey of US adolescents found that among respondents who reported more time accessing media such as social media platforms or smartphone devices, there was significantly greater depressive symptoms and increased risk of suicide when compared to adolescents who reported spending more time on non-screen activities, such as in-person social interaction or sports and recreation activities (Twenge, Joiner, Rogers, & Martin, 2018).

My daughter lost a classmate on Saturday to suicide. Kid was well liked, sports player and smart. It is scary what is going on in kids heads to make them think the only way out is death. He was 15. Terribly sad.

Kids need structure of some kind.

We are celebrating mental illness in this country instead of treating it.

My absolute worst fear. And the fact that they can make such an horrific decision for such STUPID reasons...I mean, things that aren't even that big a deal in the grand scheme.

My heart goes out to the parents

Ban social media.

It’s no coincidence mental health issues in teens have sky rocketed at the same time social media has taken off. It is toxic.

No such thing. In fact, I'd argue the absence of rigor in teen lives today leads to aimless, empty existences. Generations ago, teens were much more independent, if not relied upon to help support the family.

It's also no coincidence that the proliferation of the "mental health" industry in today's culture just happens to be at a time there is more and more distinction in society. The entire mental health industry has about as much credibility as dowsing or tarot card reading.

He wasn't a teenager but a good friend of mine from high school killed himself about 10 years ago.

I guess you never really know what's going on in someone's head and teenagers often have a tendency to withdraw from or withhold things from their parents.

I think social media plays a big role. From trying to compete with everyone else and then bullying on top of that. I'm glad it wasn't around in the 80's.
