Geoffrey Hinton was an artificial intelligence pioneer. In 2012, Dr. Hinton and two of his graduate students at the University of Toronto created technology that became the intellectual foundation for the A.I. systems that the tech industry’s biggest companies believe is a key to their future.

On Monday, however, he officially joined a growing chorus of critics who say those companies are racing toward danger with their aggressive campaign to create products based on generative artificial intelligence, the technology that powers popular chatbots like ChatGPT.

Dr. Hinton said he has quit his job at Google, where he has worked for more than decade and became one of the most respected voices in the field, so he can freely speak out about the risks of A.I. A part of him, he said, now regrets his life’s work.

Dr. Hinton’s journey from A.I. groundbreaker to doomsayer marks a remarkable moment for the technology industry at perhaps its most important inflection point in decades. Industry leaders believe the new A.I. systems could be as important as the introduction of the web browser in the early 1990s and could lead to breakthroughs in areas ranging from drug research to education.

I don’t even know why I bother making prudent financial decisions and planning for the future anymore.

Typical of scientific/socio-political elites; unleash all manner of project or policy goals, once it's too big to control THEN warn against it or disavow it.

You know, like some of the former global warming doomsayers or the guys who conspired to push all manner of legislation and draconian environmentalist ideas through years of e-mails just getting caught a few years ago. Another, the founder of Greenpeace totally recanting a short while ago. Great. As the old saying, closing the barn door after the horse has escaped.

He’s like the guy from terminator 2 that realizes what he’s creating. Unfortunately all these big tech companies see are dollar signs and cost savings by eventually being able to cut employees.

If this is really as bad as these people are suggesting, wouldn't we be way past the point of being able to put the genie back in the bottle, so to speak?

That's what I don't get about these "warnings." What are they really warning us to DO NOW?

The problem with AI is that when exposed to information and various media it immediately becomes the poliboard on steroids. Being that current designers are moral relativists (or the Chinese who are some of the most hyper racist people I have ever met) and when you start putting these things in charge, well, do the math.

Lest we forget:

He's an old bagger that is no different than the old baggers that thought rock music was spawned by the devil.

I may the the dumb, uninformed guy in the room but I dont know what they mean when they say AI is dangerous and will be the end of the world. What are some examples of how it's so dangerous? I can use my imagination but I dont understand how capable it is. It would help if these people gave examples to make their case.

Comparing public perception of rock & roll to the perception of A.I.'s just shows someone has been living under a rock. Love or hate him, but Musk has been warning about the dangers of an unregulated A.I. development for years. To the extent he's met with the past 4 POTUS, warning them with details & had been ignored by them all. He said he was a long time friend of the owner of Google but split when Google's owner told him he was not worried about the potential dangers of A.I. development; "being more interested in becoming an A.I. God".
