Swing and a miss on him.

I imagine it has more to do with the cost of that option vs the position than his performance.

Doesn't mean that exactly. If he has a good year like he did last season stringing 2 consecutive progressing seasons then he will still likely be re-signed to a new deal, just won't be as hefty as the 5th year option price tag.

he's improved slightly and maybe there's still room for betterment but he's not worthy of top tier IOL money at all.

They do not believe he is worth that much money for one year or offering him a extended contract at this point. They also may see someone on the team who is not that far behind him skill wise who is dirt cheap. Seems in the next year we will have two new guards.

They drafted his cheap replacement in Saldiveri

He had a good year last year.

I think that’s Peat’s replacement.
Ruiz had a bad first two years. He was pretty good last year. This year he hopefully puts it together and strings two good years back to back this year.

Shawn was hitting more than the bong that draft night

Don't think he's ever played left side anything.

The option would be cheaper than a new deal, if Ruiz continues to improve and is actually good. If he’s not any good, you don’t want to bring him back
You could very well have two new guards next year. Some combo of Saldiveri/Penning/Hurst depending on who lands the tackle job

if you go G in round 1, they should be day one impact starters not "well he was solid in year 3 compared to the first 2 atrocious years"

This is price not performance

Definite chance he’ll be back. I’ve been a bit of a Ruiz apologist, but I think it’s warranted.
2020- Covid, no real off-season, changed positions, rookie
2021- McCoy gets hurt in week 1, misses 5 weeks, Ruiz has to flip over to center
2022- First normal season, performs well
If he duplicates this season, he should be back at a fair price.

This..
The number I saw was 14 mil.
Not to say the Saints won't resign Ruiz but they're not locking in at that price.

Because he’s not good enough to not risk losing him

But he's better and more reliable than Peat, who will also be gone next season.
I honestly thought Ruiz would be a prime trade piece during the draft. Ge would likely excel in his natural position at center but he's not unseating McCoy who ironically IMO would be just as good at the guard spot. Since we're starting with a new QB this season that would be the first thing I'd try out on camp and offseason training.
