Renters can break lease if property is unsafe
Why are there so many laws now to protect deadbeat leaders?
I know someone who has been tied up court with a renter since January. They haven’t paid rent in 8 months. The renter has a federally backed pro bono law firm. Even if the landlord wins this time (which the trial is set in May) the renter can “appeal” and drag it out months longer. Meanwhile their property looks like shite and needs landscaping and repairs from neglect.

Currently House Bill 606, proposed by Representative Edmond Jordan, is anything but watered down. The bill still requires the lighting and cameras, but also allows renters to get out of their lease if two or more 'criminal instances' were reported to police in a six month time frame within a half-mile radius of the property.

She understands that this may put a burden on landlords, but Toliver says if a property owner can't afford to make these changes than they shouldn't own property.

"If you are rich enough to own a property, than surely you have the funds to make your property safe," Toliver told WBRZ. The bill would also require property owners to tell prospective tenants about crimes that happened nearby the property.

Is there ANYWHERE in New Orleans proper that wouldn't fall under this?

These millenial rentoids that don’t want to pay rent and tip their landlord appropriately are gonna end up living in tents like they do in California if they keep this up

So only rich people own property???

A half mile radius is literally all of Baton Rouge (and likely any major city).

Smoke N Scan livestreams LA city council meetings and there is always someone complaining about how renters are discriminated against and don’t have free lawyers to fight landlords in court

Forget New Orleans. I think every moderately populated area in the world would get dinged by this standard.

How would a landlord address crime off property?
There will be a selling frenzy of rental properties in almost every part of Louisiana.

This is all smoke and mirrors to keep their constituents in free housing.

Theoretically you can rent in CCLA and there be a crime committed at the Waffle House, Home Depot, or Blue bayou and since it’s within a half mile radius you could get out of your lease. This guy is a moron.

I'm going to try using this line with my mortgage company.

Law of unintended consequences, people run out of places to rent. Rent in decent areas goes up because nobody buys property to rent out in high crime areas. Lots of homeless people. Democrats scream why to people that rent out propert hate black people? They won't invest in high crime areas!

Vote Democrat, get Democrats.

This is ALWAYS how these people think. The ideology trickles through everything.

Good.
Edit: I take it back. frick these people. I thought it was about putting pressure on local govt. No it's against the landlords and typical own nothing and be happy communist bullshite
Exactly the ones to vote in lawlessness and then want to run away from it to vote it in somewhere else.

This is so dumb. How in the hell are landlords supposed to make the area safer?? So if there was 2 or more criminal reports in a 1/2 mile radius you can just break your lease? How is this on the owner? How can being rich fix that problem? Nex will be they will not pay rent because they feel unsafe. Clown world

I think this is the same legislator that is representing that EBR councilman who resides out of his district, ignores the permitting process, avoids his court dates, and just uses his position to flaunt the law.

So the landlords are now responsible for the security of the surrounding area? Well technically, that could be achieved as long as no one sweats the details, I suppose....

All of Shreveport west of E Kings Highway would qualify for this.

Damn, doesn't even have to be a crime, just report a few "criminal instances" at any business within 1/2 mile and you get to walk from your lease.
Could you imagine the impact of this bill on apartment complexes
