What you are describing is a good old fashioned beagle.

Great with families/kids, will track anything you train them to with remarkable precision, extremely food motivated and highly intelligent for easy training for anything from circus tricks to deer tracking, and they are small so you don't have to spend a fortune feeding them. They are also generally healthy dogs requiring lower vet bills long term.

Edit to add: crate train them to sleep inside at night so they aren't outside howling all night.

Since the dog with stay inside non shedding should be the number one characteristic you look for. It will spend 99% of it's time inside.

Get rid of the 6.5 needmore and get a 30.06 and learn the tried and true old timer neck shot and you won't need to track.

Catahoulas are solid dogs, good with kids, and a good nose.

Goldendoodle will track for your occasional deer. I sold one to a guy in Lafayette that’s done a phenomenal job in making him a blood, duck, and house dog.

Deutsch Drahthaar (aka german wirehair) would be a great option. Do a little research on them and send me an email if your interested. Username @yahoo. I have a litter of Drahthaars that turned 2 weeks yesterday, and have a couple that are not spoken for yet.

Second the Drahthaar. I love mine and he’s a machine hunting any and everything.
Duckaholic has well bred dogs and I’ve heard nothing but good things about him and his pups.

Edit: if you want something smaller, look into a Teckel. It’s a German breeding of a dachshund and they’re bred to blood trail.

I have a German Shepherd. First one I've had, and the best dog I've ever had, but he sheds like a mofo! Some days i'll come into the living room and it looks like a barber has been cutting hair in there all day.

I’ve had a bunch of them over the years and now I only use Catahoulas. My current one is hands down the best track dog I’ve ever seen. Great with kids long as you keep the energy under control don’t let them think it’s ok to jump etc. also they will be protective of the house and family. All around my favorite dog. Will do anything you want but they do need a strong owner

Have had 2 Jack russels at different times, completely different personalities and loved them both. High energy, shed like crazy and typically don’t like small kids. They’ve been bred to bite at sudden movements so if a child makes an unpredictable move it will get nipped. Both of my kids got nipped by invading the dog bed or grabbing at the dog.

If you like the look of the German Wirehair or the Draathar but don't need the energy/psychopathy, look into Wirehaired Pointing Griffons. Mines great with my two year old and lives indoors. Has the energy, drive, and nose to smell a popcorn fart in a wildfire.

You’re either gonna get a golden doodle or a Frenchie because that’s what she sees everyone else posting about on bookface

Seems like a good job for a beagle. I ain't sure exactly what is entailed but beagles have incredible noses, love nothing more than following a trail, are great pets and indoor dogs and do not shed. They do have a horrible indoor voice but they can be broke of the habit.

This forum got me looking into them about a year ago and I’m really glad it did. I will never own another Lab. Watching these dogs work is wild.
