"Right" the new "Um"?

Am I crazy or has anyone else noticed the prevalence of people saying "right" during conversation?
I don't know if it's a new thing but I can't unhear it. Some people use it almost after every sentence.

No, bc I don’t associate with morons.

I knew someone about ten years ago who consistently used “right?” to support their own statements.
I was not overly impressed with their intellectual capacity to start with, that affect didn’t help my estimation to improve.
Right?

It’s out of hand. Also noticing ‘sorta’ being stuck in between worlds for no reason a lot these days too. Both huge pet peeves of mine.

If I say something and you respond with "Right?", I immediately have zero respect for you

It is more of a cultural / area thing. I noticed it used a lot more when I moved to Texas from La.

Product of listening to GPS directions for too long.

Ditto. If someone says it I hear nothing else.

They are tired of hearing you talk.

May be. I just moved to Minneapolis and noticed it. But hearing it now even when talking to friends and family back home.

It is absolutely more prevalent. I’ve noticed it most when someone is speaking to convince others, and is trying to sell their opinion or speculation as fact. I interpret it as a cheap coping mechanism for an insecure speaker.

It's an unconscious doubt of the statement and lack of confidence along with the seeking of approval. It's primarily a modern college educated, corporate office, types.
I don't see much of this in the building tradesman world of South Louisiana that I work in.

Yes, it’s almost as annoying as “you know”.
