Why did so many Saints fans expect Jameis to be great last year?

It’s just a textbook example of personal bias and groupthink. Any objective person from the outside could have seen the situation for what it was. Jameis was always a mediocre NFL QB who showed some flashes of brilliance but even more flashes of boneheaded play. He’s just too inconsistent and not a good enough leader or student of the game in order to be a great NFL QB
I do think he’s a good backup though. I’m glad to have him in that role. I think we’ll be in good hands with Carr as the starter this year and Jameis can be a good backup

Most saints fans expected the team to be great based on the defense and added weapons. I can’t name a person that thought Jameis would be “great”. Vast majority were just expecting good if healthy.

Because the fanbase is loaded with people who think they are bigger fans if they're overwhelmingly positive about every move the franchise makes.

Bc he threw 14 tds and 3 ints the year before. And if you broke down the ints. 2 were last second heaves at the end of halves. And the other one was bc Project Peat stepped on his foot as he released a pass.
Also, there were probably 6-8 tds dropped from our shitty group of receivers that could create zero separation.
We drafted Olave. MT was back. We picked up Jarvis Landry. There was reason for optimism. Problem is. He really wasn’t healthy. And that’s why his play declined more than anything.

I have to admit, I was one of those fans. I thought from what we saw until he was injured was moving in the positive direction. Maybe, just maybe things would work out with him at the helm. Unfortunately, that did not work out and now, hopefully with Carr, we can move forward and compete at the very least for the NFC South.

He also had at least two bad Winstonesque ints overturned b/c of penalties last year.
Payton did a great job of managing him last year. But he’s gone. Id love to have seen what he could do with Carr. Think he would have been a perfect fit for his offense.

He is very talented. He’s always been a little immature. The hope was being around Brees and CSP would help show him what he needed to do to be a leader. Before his injury, he was playing well and was getting better each game.
I think he would have been better last season if CSP was here. But he wasn’t and he struggled. He was also injured.
The hope is that the coaching staff can harness the talent of players. He played well the year before and you hoped he took the next step. It didn’t help that we lost our best WR and they were misusing Kamara last year either.

Because he's got a cannon, has thrown for 5,000 yards and before he got hurt, showed he could cut down on turnovers.

And you would be wrong according to all the experts. Carr commanded a big contract from the Saints because his market value was high enough for that.
Winston couldn’t find a single team that was interested in him and was forced to return to the Saints as a backup. There was no market for him.
