Clark v LSU drew much higher #s than Clark v SC drew. LSU/Mulkey effect.

I bet 99% of viewers never heard of clark until the taunting. you're telling me this random white chick from Iowa single-handedly doubled the ratings from last year? smarten up mate
It's not that far off IMO. I watched several of their games just to see her play. The only other time I watch women's sports is the women's world cup and tennis if my wife has it on. She was a big draw

I hope you're not serious. ESPN couldn't go a day without mentioning her during the season.

People still watch ESPN when they aren't watching a game?

The Iowa games out paced all the other games in ratings pretty obvious what the reason is

1. It is not a bad thing the popularity of WBB "may" be growing. It was the first WBB game I watched from start to finish in a long time...maybe ever. But it does appear there is some manipulation of the data to back an agenda there was a massive increase in popularity.
2. A big part of the 103% increase is that for the first time in nearly 30 years the game was broadcast on network TV (ABC) instead of cable. That made a HUGE impact on the ratings. Don't think so? The second most watched game was the 1995 championship game between UConn and Tenn. "Coincidentally" that was the last time the game was broadcast on network TV (CBS) before Sunday. Also, it appears that 9.9M number is COMBINED viewership on ABC and ESPN2. Now, it is entirely likely that number would have been the same had the game just been shown on ABC if you believe the people watching on ESPN2 would have just found the game on ABC had it not been simulcast on ESPN2. But it is a point of clarification.
Below is a chart of the championship game ratings from 1995-2023. As noted above, it is bookended by the last two games shown on network TV...which are the two highest rated games. In between the ratings (on average) generally were in the high 3M - 4.5M ranger over the course of 26 years.
Is the sport growing in popularity? Probably. Are the ratings this year indicative a sudden massive increase in interest? Probably not. It's more likely a case of compiling the data in a manner to reflect such a position.

For some CFB perspective on 9.9 million viewers for the women's championship game.
That's more than last season's:
-- Sugar, Orange and Cotton Bowls
-- Big 12, Pac-12 and ACC title games
-- Notre Dame-USC
-- LSU-Alabama
-- Ohio St-Penn St
-- Bama-Texas A&M primetime on CBS

I can't imagine voluntarily sitting and watching a women's basketball game.
Im the first to admit I am not a fan normally but that was a damn good game. Better than any men's game Ive seen in recent years.

Never heard of her but I don’t watch the same liberal shite you do.

Yeah I was about to say the number jump has a lot more to do with it being on ABC for the first time.
Like comparing Stanley Cup Finals ratings when they had the first few games on NBC Sports Network, the games on main NBC obliterated them in ratings of course.

No, but thanks to brain drain, I've seen a fair bit of LSU gear outside the South.
It's not "the" factor for the ratings surge, but, LSU seems to have one of the more fanatical fan bases that watches literally anything featuring an LSU logo on it.

but if you can give me multiple Reese/Clark situations (both controversial and relating to star power), then I'd be more inclined to watch the women's game.
But that’s the top two teams. UConn and Geno vs Pat and Tennessee used to drive ratings as well, but people don’t care as much when it’s teams that will lose in the Sweet 16 or Elite Eight

But we have a lot more sports fans than almost any other state. Also, LSU always gets big numbers in nationally televised games. Still, these ratings had a good bit to do with how much attention Clark was getting.
