re: Question About State Job Verbal Job Offer (UPDATE)

The state is notoriously bad when it comes to following up on job offers. I work for the State now. I've seen people wait for weeks with no contact. HR in my agency sucks.

Sure looks like we got a bunch of state workers on here playing around on the internet on the public's dime.

You have already started training for the job. Remember to always sand bag, deflect blame, and never pass up an opportunity to do less. If you stick to this you'll go far as a state employee.

LDH huh,
Did you interview with:
1 name starts with V
1 name starts with B
1 starts with M
1 with C
If so we need to contact each other.
Obviously, I’m not gonna put any names on the Internet.
But the name that starts with the V is equivalent to the devil.
No one has ever met V in person. Not even her Sups. No one in the whole dept has ever met V.
How can this be?
Other managers can’t explain it either.
I don’t work there, but I am in the transportation industry.
I’ve had to deal with her, and I know she has the highest turnover of anyone.
Dude,
It’s a small world and if it’s V,
you want to run as far away as you can.

Yeah mine took 2 plus months. While I learned a lot from my time in government, I am glad to be private sector.

If it was Friday AFTER last the verbal hasn't happened yet

The process to get a state job is protracted to say the least.
By the time the state is willing to get someone officially hired, the prospective employee has typically taken a job elsewhere because they needed something quicker.

Working for the government sounds absolutely unbearable.
I do a little business with them and it's almost comical how much money and time they can waste. It would be funny if it wasn't our money

State HR is slow as shite. I work at the state and it's slow for me.

This is the reason I won't apply for a government job.
There's enough uncertainty around job searching. I don't need the added stress of accepting a verbal and then waiting 1/6 of a year before I'm sure that everything is actually going through.

No, it's great making the contractors miserable.

Buy us better toilet paper and paper towels and we will behave. Those brown paper towels only take up our time by wiping some drop of water for 5 minutes.

DOE is worst I've seen. My wife (no pics) had to wait 3 months to hire someone bc HR took so long. She had to carry the jobs of 3 ppl before getting the one. After 7 months, she finally has the 3. Now she is backed up bc she has to train them.

The day after I made this post, I actually got the written job offer that was actually dated 2 days prior
With the start date they gave me, I can't even give my job two weeks notice. Also, they took so long that I decided to go on vacay with the family for spring break next week, so today is the last day of my current job because of Good Friday holiday.
Not off to the best start but hoping the great pay increase is worth it.

I would be very careful about your first year or so until probation is done.
Until you are permanent, you don’t want to piss off some little dictator and get unceremoniously walked out.

Been doing it over 20 years and it’s way better than the corporate world. I don’t work for the state though. State work does seem pretty bad, but probably depends on what department or agency.
