Great info.

It seems like WBB still has a ways to go to get to the point where their championship tournament can break even.

What are the cost/income numbers for LSU's women's basketball program?

Earlier in this thread someone posted the number. We lost 6 million plus last year.

They're watching now because of one Kim Mulkey! Before that I'm sure nobody cared, but Mulkey has brought a lot of attention to the sport because of who she is. I mean even the outfits that she wears is given to her by some fashion company that has her wear their brand for the attention that it brings. I think they outfit her whole staff, and she will bring money in to that sport, no doubt about it. The woman is a star and she's maybe the biggest name in womens college ball right now with people like Staley and Geno hot on her heels.

You do realize she’s been doing this for a long time. She had been to the Final Four before, and in fact she won it.

She has created a ton of interest in BR, but that won’t move the national needle one bit.

Oh they definitely have a ways to go. If they can secure their own tv deal, and provide a revenue split from it, it would help tremendously.

Securing a deal is easy, the problem is inking s big enough deal to meet their needs.

I hope the people that never watch but tuned into last night's game give it another go. I promise it's not usually that bad offensively lol.

Watched a bit of the Iowa-Louisville game and it was quite entertaining

I actually went to LA Tech after graduating in 89 so needless to say there were always people watching then, there....but now

With the 1- and done men's bb, along with soo many controversies and b.s. people may find it just a tad easier to pull for some successful long term Atheletic programs when they have "Extraordinary" talent i.e. Angel, this Freshman coming in, in my day Venus Lacy.. gal could dunk in- game..
Not ever going to be a sport I watch religiously like football, baseball, etc..but I can understand the growth in the fan base! I hope it continues

Link?

May have been said by some, Robert Mann if he posts on here, but overwhelmingly the vast majority were excited about the hire regardless of the sport’s relevance comparatively with LSU’s other sports programs.

Of course I do, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the fact that she's a star head coach because of that long career that you're talking about, and she'll bring instant credibility to LSU women's Bball program because of who she is. That's what I'm talking about!

It’s really dry simple, after CFB & MBB the other sports still need to be represented in a good light if you want to be a major player in the SEC. Baseball and WBB are about on an even keel right now so I am glad we have be out in two great coaches to lead the programs. And the women’s game is going to continue to grow now that they are getting more exposure. And I believe that eventually it might even be able to break even if we keep selling out the PMAC and the women’s tournament gets its own deal with ESPN.

So just like I am glad that we have a great Gymnastics program and hopefully keep getting better in all of the other sports I want nothing but the best for LSU. I want to win an all sports SEC title on year.

They operated at a +$6 million deficit last year. Maybe with the Final Four money we can recoup more than that. I believe operations and staff per year are around $8 million. So people aren’t totally wrong.

It may be an ugly brand but so much fun to watch. Scrappy fighters. I've seen blood drawn in 3 games this playoff.

So should we spend $1 mil and still be losing or spend $2 mil and make the final four?

This article is pretty much against what I normally stand for but I found it interesting and shed a very different financial light on the women's Final 4 ( and bb in general) WSJ 2021 article

WSJ article on women's final 4 - 2021

Edit:

Article goes on to state that by restructuring TV agreements and the like by 2025 they could increase the revenue by 100 mil.

I mean, I hope they do well and all but damn...I've watched 3 games this year including the Miami game and just found it extremely hard to watch...I just kept hearing about how great they are...and when you see them play you realize how bad the sport is as a whole...if THIS team is one of the best I'd hate to see the worst.

Not really. After football and basketball (except for maybe softball) Alabama isn't noteworthy in any of the minor sports. And I doubt their fanbase, or anyone else for that matter, really cares. Begrudgingly, I think most would agree Alabama is a "major player" in the SEC despite not having much significant success outside of football and basketball.

What the WBB team is doing is great. If it makes some number of LSU fans/alumni happy and proud, all the better! But it doesn't move the needle nationally. And success is those sports is not necessary to make a school a "major player" from a relevancy perspective. If LSU football wins a national championship every sports fan across the country knows it. Same for basketball considering the NCAAT is nearly a BILLION dollar enterprise. If they win a championship in WBB, baseball, track, etc it might get a blurb in the paper or a day or so of coverage on TV, but that's about it.

Watch the game. Be excited and proud for the players/school. Pull like hell for them to win. But don't make it bigger than it really is...which is just kind of an afterthought in the sports world.
