NEW ORLEANS — It takes a special kind of student to outsmart 2,000 years of mathematicians -- at St. Mary's Academy, they have two.

Calcea Johnson and Ne'Kiya Jackson just gave a presentation to the American Mathematical Society's Annual Southeastern Conference. They say they've proved Pythagoras' Theorem can be proven with trigonometry -- something that many thought was impossible.

Good job young ladies.

St Mary's is a good school. It's like the girl St Aug. It's gated in.

Maybe, but it's a nice relief from other stories we usually hear out of NOLA East.

ok, so you gonna tell us how this is possible or are we supposed to just take your word for it?

Basically, trigonometry is based on Pythagoras' Theorem (A^2 + B^2 = C^2, sound familiar?), so using trigonometry to prove Pythagoras's Theorem is what's known as circular logic.

An idea can't prove itself.

Beyond counting past 22, thanks to my fingers and toes, I assume anything someone tells me about math is the truth.

That's how the OT improved my gas mileage.
