Bill would more than triple lawmaker pay in Louisiana

Louisiana lawmakers would receive a $43,000 pay raise if Gretna Representative Joseph Marino’s bill passes. The current salary for legislators has been $16,800 since 1980. Marino said when you compare salaries from 40 years ago, it would average more than $60,000 today for the part-time position.
“It’s absolutely an increase in salary but it’s an adjustment based upon the cost of living so that you can afford to be a legislator,” said Marino.
Marino said he’s not filing the legislation to line his own pockets because he wouldn’t even be eligible for the pay increase due to term limits. He said he’s doing it to encourage more qualified individuals to run for office.
“If you tell them that the pay is $16,800 and you’re going to be tied up in Baton Rouge anywhere from three to six months, and that’s when you’re in session. It’s cost prohibited for people to do this job,” said Marino.
In addition to the annual regular legislative session, lawmakers are also required to come to the capitol for special sessions. Since being elected in 2016, Marino said he’s been called to Baton Rouge 19 times. He said it’s a part-time job that not everyone can fiscally perform due to the demands.
“Or are we only going to have retired people or very wealthy people that are state representatives or senators? That’s my concern,” said Marino.
If passed the pay raise would go into effect in January 2024.

To be fair, $16,800 isn't very enticing.
But they do have perks

it's not supposed to be about the money.

I’m ok with this if it resulted in more competent legislators like he claims it will.
It won’t.
It won’t.

I honestly didn’t know they only made 16k

I know Joe Marino, what’s sad is, the dude isn’t hurting, and neither or any of his counterparts…
I get the raise, but 300%?

Seems fair to me. I thought this was largely considered a part time gig, and most of these people have legal jobs or businesses on the side.

Maybe this way they'll steal less...

I have a good idea. Let them keep ten cents for each dollar of taxes, or fees that they cut. I don’t like giving them something for nothing, but we’d come out way ahead.

They also get $160 per diem. It's a part-time job. They're not supposed to get much pay.
This was attempted once before under Jindal. Gubernatorial candidate John Schroder then a freshmen Rep. was one of the ones voting for this. Fiscal Hawk my arse

This is a tough one, because higher pay is just about the only way to actually

How about sliding scale?
You are compensated with an amount to where your total income is, say, 75k.
If your private income is 150k then you collect no paycheck, but expenses are allowed.

Which is sometimes a problem. When all the legislators are attorneys it's hard to get tort reform passed.

Kind of where I am at. I think higher compensation has to be part of the effort to attract better individuals to office, but by no means will raising the pay accomplish that goal on its own.

I think maybe there's something to be said for not making the "perks" the most enticing part of the job.
