It is interesting stuff. There are historical records of the first explorers encountering wild turkeys down in present-day Plaquemines Parish. The same records tell of one of the expedition crew committing suicide because the mosquitos were so bad. I think they have some of these diaries in the Historic New Orleans Collection.

There’s a wild elk population in the nw corner of Michigan’s lower peninsula. It’s where saints former 1st round pick Adam trautman grew up.

Am I thinking of another state, or is there some island in LA that has an actual monkey population?

Or am I just thinking of the Primate Research institute.

Anyway, can you imagine swamp gorillas?

ETA: there IS a monkey island in LA. Not sure if it still has monkeys on it, but I found some info to indicate that it had a population (introduced) of monkeys at some point in its history, hence the name.

Can you imagine life in the coastal marshes before modern conveniences like mosquito netting and bug spray?

Talk to anyone who fishes marshes on the gulf coast and when the gnats hatch it’s almost unimaginable how annoying they are.

I'm pretty sure there are also accounts of bison being present around what is now New Orleans.

Honest question, is there a reason why it's surpising that wild turkeys were observed in Plaquemines Parish? They are native to south Louisiana.

Absolutely

the restoration of charismatic megafauna is, without a doubt, the single most pressing political project currently before us and the only visible path out of America's current malaise.
Unfortunately no candidate or party has the vision or courage to plainly state this unavoidable fact.
