I'm not going to bash that squad, simply repeat what I said earlier- it's a magnificent roster, for the concept that every shot counts the same (aka before the 3 pt shot). It's not truly elite when you move into the 3 pt era.

You had 1 guy who could get super-hot, Chris Jackson. You had another guy who could go off, Mo Williamson, but he also played out of control (I remember a game where he had 12 assists, AND 12 turnovers).

It was extremely frontcourt-loaded, which unfortunately made things somewhat predictable. Stanley and Shaq were monsters, but had trouble with FTs. And only Stanley of the 2 was somewhat polished on the offensive end, at that point. Sims was a big body banger with a soft 12-15 ft shot, not an integral part of the game. Singleton was a slasher and had huge hops, but very limited range. So on and so forth...
You score the LSU-GT game with only 2 pt shots, we win. But long jumpers (3's) made the difference; Kenny Anderson equaled CJ, and Oliver could matchup with Singleton because he was strong at 6-4, with way more range. But we had nothing for Scott at all, a 6-7 guy shooting from beyond the arc.

We'd score 2 pretty consistently, with some missed free throws. They'd hit spurts of 3's, and draw fouls from guys trying to guard their scorers. Look up the box score, CJ and Vernel fouled out, Shaq, Mo and Stanley all had 4 fouls.

You put that LSU lineup before 1986 (first full year of the 3 pt shot in NCAA play), we probably win the title. This was 3 years after that; some teams were beginning to adapt to the new style. LSU hadn't.

Side note, Clemson also had a similar team with Elden Campbell and Dale Davis (Duo of Doom). They got one rd deeper, but again, elite centers were becoming a thing of the past.
I think we'd have whipped their arse, had we played. We had the slightly bigger towers, and a better backcourt.

I do. I was at LSU from 1981 to 1985. Dale Brown was all emotion and motivation with zero discipline. On a couple of occasions, he let the TV network mic him, and it was embarrassing. His huddle was all "Do you think we can win? Do you believe we will win?". Then he would sketch up some simple play which the players would completely ignore.

80-81' was the year you are referring to and we only had 2 lossed before losing to Indiana.

But Knight's statement was after the Elite 8 matchup in 87.

I didn't say "best team." I said that they were likely the most talented assembly of college basketballers ever. They were never permitted to play as a unit without Dale's interference, and never fully proved their worth as a team-- a far cry from North Carolina 1982, Indiana 1986, or Kentucky in 2012.

That guy has no idea what he’s talking about and didn’t watch those teams. “Shaq could barely dunk”? Stanley was 288lbs at LSU and moved well. He didn’t blow up until about year 3 or 4 in the NBA. We had multiple NBA guys, 4 first rounders and 2 top 3 overall draft picks on that roster. He’s calling you ignorant and he doesn’t know shite.
