That season was the beginning of the end of the Dale Brown Era. Arguably the most talented collection of college basketballers in history; Dale Brown spent the whole season browbeatening and berating them in the lockerroom after the games.

They would have had MUCH more success as a team just doing what they did naturally, without Brown's collusion -- play basketball! It's mind boggling to consider Shaq was on the team for three seasons, and none of those teams made it past the round of 32!

Back in the days when unlv was allowed to hack, slash, bite, mug
their way to the Finals, or near-it.

Our best team was like 81-82 wing Rudy Macklin etc, they were like 31-4 or some crazy shite like that. I believed this is the infamous Bobby Knight quote but I could be wrong . Anyway, what actually happened I’d that Rudy broke his damn finger or something on his shooting hand in the 3rd round.

I
quote:

Mo was a very good 3pt shooter, 38%, who could get red hot yet he only took 97 that year compared to CJs 246. He also did a poor job using Roberts and the stable of forwards we had on the roster. Brown did a terrible job with that group.
I'm not going to bash that squad, simply repeat what I said earlier- it's a magnificent roster, for the concept that every shot counts the same (aka before the 3 pt shot). It's not truly elite when you move into the 3 pt era.

You had 1 guy who could get super-hot, Chris Jackson. You had another guy who could go off, Mo Williamson, but he also played out of control (I remember a game where he had 12 assists, AND 12 turnovers).

It was extremely frontcourt-loaded, which unfortunately made things somewhat predictable. Stanley and Shaq were monsters, but had trouble with FTs. And only Stanley of the 2 was somewhat polished on the offensive end, at that point. Sims was a big body banger with a soft 12-15 ft shot, not an integral part of the game. Singleton was a slasher and had huge hops, but very limited range. So on and so forth...
You score the LSU-GT game with only 2 pt shots, we win. But long jumpers (3's) made the difference; Kenny Anderson equaled CJ, and Oliver could matchup with Singleton because he was strong at 6-4, with way more range. But we had nothing for Scott at all, a 6-7 guy shooting from beyond the arc.

We'd score 2 pretty consistently, with some missed free throws. They'd hit spurts of 3's, and draw fouls from guys trying to guard their scorers. Look up the box score, CJ and Vernel fouled out, Shaq, Mo and Stanley all had 4 fouls.

You put that LSU lineup before 1986 (first full year of the 3 pt shot in NCAA play), we probably win the title. This was 3 years after that; some teams were beginning to adapt to the new style. LSU hadn't.

Side note, Clemson also had a similar team with Elden Campbell and Dale Davis (Duo of Doom). They got one rd deeper, but again, elite centers were becoming a thing of the past.
I think we'd have whipped their arse, had we played. We had the slightly bigger towers, and a better backcourt.

That was our shot, along with 1981.

In 90 I guess we ran in to a buzz saw in Georgia Tech. We had an incredible amount of talent. I still have gold cups with purple letters saying National Champions that were printed up in advance for Mardi Gras.

In 1981 (when I was a student) it was because Rudy Macklin broke his finger.

That's just ridiculous. At one point he had the longest tournament streak in the country and went to 2 Final Fours.

I do. I was at LSU from 1981 to 1985. Dale Brown was all emotion and motivation with zero discipline. On a couple of occasions, he let the TV network mic him, and it was embarrassing. His huddle was all "Do you think we can win? Do you believe we will win?". Then he would sketch up some simple play which the players would completely ignore.

I would argue the overall roster quality and depth was better in 84-85, but the top end was certainly better in 89-90.

Shaq was pretty raw and CJ got a bit of the big head his sophomore year and there were ego issues as has been well documented. Dale did not do a good job of handling those.

Stupid ignorant post. So stupid. Shaq could barely dunk, Stanley was fat and out of shape, CJ shot and shot and shot. We had one great NBA player in Shaq and he was an infant in basketball years. Other teams had multiple NBA players and we act like we had the greatest team in history. So ducking stupid. DALE BROWN is LSU and if he could take Ricky Blanton and Don Redding to the final 4 he was capable on bringing this team. Leave the old man alone and gfy

80-81' was the year you are referring to and we only had 2 lossed before losing to Indiana.

But Knight's statement was after the Elite 8 matchup in 87.

bullshite. LSU beat UNLV that season. UNLV was the national champs. UNLV beat GT in the final 4. Should have been LSU in the final 4

Kenny Anderson. Greatest HS point guard of all time. 4x all NYC

Now tell me how did Will Wade have 4 NBA players in the starting five and get destroyed by Michigan

That’s not exactly true. He inherited a shite program over here and built it into a national brand. Yes he was a great recruiter but he was also innovative and fearless as a coach. From his freak defenses to his pressure release offenses to him scheduling and beating elite opponents the day after we had played a night game. He did everything a man possibly could for his program. Now when talking about the Shaq years he definitely couldn’t settle on an identity and it cost us. He underachieved big time. Maybe that was the point where the game was getting past him because even with a lot of talent the next couple years we kept sinking to the bottom. He was near great and great in some areas at one point then started to decline but that’s the lifecycle of every coach. It just sucks that his decline started with our most talented roster.

Take a deep look at this roster-- it's pretty impressive:

Chris Jackson SO G 6-1 27.8 Pts, 2.5 Reb, 3.2 Ast
Stanley Roberts SO C 7-0 14.1 Pts, 9.8 Reb, 1.3 Ast
Shaquille O'Neal FR C 7-1 13.9 Pts, 12.0 Reb, 1.9 Ast
Maurice Williamson SO G 6-0 12.2 Pts, 2.3 Reb, 3.8 Ast
Vernel Singleton SO F 6-7 8.4 Pts, 4.8 Reb, 0.8 Ast
Wayne Sims JR F 6-7 7.8 Pts, 4.8 Reb, 1.8 Ast
Randy Devall JR G 6-4 4.7 Pts, 3.7 Reb, 3.3 Ast
Harold Boudreaux SO F 6-9 2.4 Pts, 2.1 Reb, 0.3 Ast
Richard Krajewski JR C 6-10 0.4 Pts, 0.5 Reb, 0.1 Ast
Dennis Tracey JR G 6-4 0.7 Pts, 0.5 Reb, 0

I didn't say "best team." I said that they were likely the most talented assembly of college basketballers ever. They were never permitted to play as a unit without Dale's interference, and never fully proved their worth as a team-- a far cry from North Carolina 1982, Indiana 1986, or Kentucky in 2012.

That guy has no idea what he’s talking about and didn’t watch those teams. “Shaq could barely dunk”? Stanley was 288lbs at LSU and moved well. He didn’t blow up until about year 3 or 4 in the NBA. We had multiple NBA guys, 4 first rounders and 2 top 3 overall draft picks on that roster. He’s calling you ignorant and he doesn’t know shite.

CJ was great but all around Kenny Anderson was the best guard in the country and maturity usually beats youth no matter how good the youth is. CJ could be a detriment on defense sometimes.
