I think the 86-87 team with Nikita Wilson and Anthony Wilson were just as good. Had Indiana on the ropes in the Elite 8 until Bob Knight got into everyone's head.

CJ was older than Anderson. He was a better player too.

You're entitled to your opinion, but Kenny Anderson was first team Parade All-American and the top rated player in his class, ahead of Shaq.

As a Freshman - yes he was. Kenny Anderson dropped 26, Dennis Scott (also HS Player of the Year) dropped 30, Shaq had 19, Mahmoud had 13 and fouled out. Excuses aside, Anderson outplayed Mahmoud and Shaquille. Close game, but Georgia Tech had a great team with equal if not better talent top to bottom.

Bobby Cremins was one of the top recruiters of that era (Scott, Anderson, Travis Best, Stephon Marbury).

You’re all over the place jumping from HS accolades to single game stats while excluding other players. This narrative that they had as much talent as us is silly. They had 2 guys, Brian Oliver and Malcom Mackey were Geert Hammink level players who weren’t even drafted as high as the Dutchman.

You didn't see innovative coaching out of LSU during Dale Brown's tenure after Tex left.

Tex Winter coached at LSU for one season. Yet, many on here act like he was the behind the scenes mastermind at LSU for the majority of the Brown tenure. Brown had already taken LSU to a Final Four and Elite Eight before Winter arrived. He took them to another Final Four and Elite Eight after Winter left.

Every year we get this question. And it is always answered through the purview of hindsight. But you have to go back to 1990. Jackson was in his Soph. season and he wasn't playing the same at the end of 1990. The discussion has always been that changing his Tourette's medicine during that season changed him as a player. Shaq was a physical specimen. But he was also a true freshman. People forget that true freshmen at that time weren't looked as as the go to guys in those days or really expected to be the "man" on the team. A lot of what Shaq was doing that year was just raw ability...not unlike many great freshmen during that era.

Could Brown have done a better job coaching in that game? Absolutely! (specifically going a bit smaller to combat Tech instead of playing O'Neal and Roberts together the whole game). But it's not like this was a FDU vs. Purdue upset. Georgia Tech was really damn good. They had the national freshman of the year in Kenny Anderson. They had ACC POY in Dennis Scott. And they played a style a lot of teams didn't play at that time. They shot a ton of 3's. Keep in mind, the 3 point shot had only become available in 1987 and was still not viewed as a great shot as it is today. Defenses WANTED opponents to shoot 3's. They didn't really try to run teams off the line.

Georgia Tech was a top 10 team late in the season before a pair of two point losses to Virginia and North Carolina to end the season. They then won the ACC Tournament coming into the NCAAT.

It's not like the game was a blowout. LSU had a shot to take the lead with less than 20 seconds to play. Overall, LSU shot 47% while holding Georgia Tech to 37%. The difference? Georgia Tech made 10 three's (on 40% shooting) and 10 more FTs than LSU (Singleton and Roberts when a combined 3-11 from the line; Shaq was 9-12). That was just enough for Georgia Tech to skirt by with a 3 point win...en route to the Final Four before losing to a UNLV team that LSU had beaten that season.

It was frustrating loss. But that is the cruelty of the NCAA Tournament. One poor stretch in a game can end a season's worth of work. Lord knows LSU had their moments where they did that to other great teams. Most notably in 1986 and 1987

How about this. In the final minute - Kenny Anderson pushes the ball up the court hits a floater in the lane, steals from Stanley Roberts, knocked the ball away from Mo Williamson in transition, and gets the game sealing rebound. That's a complete player.

Even if you don't understand what 4x all-nyc, 3 Time Parade-All American talent means.. he won that game.

Brown did a terrible job with that group

That group made it to the elite eight where they loss by 3 to a very talented Georgia Tech team, who shot almost 75% from the line while LSU was shooting 55% from the line.

Disappointing end to an exciting season? Yes. Terrible coaching job no. imo

bullshite. LSU beat UNLV that season. UNLV was the national champs. UNLV beat GT in the final 4. Should have been LSU in the final 4
Stacey Augmon (All American, 3 time Defensive POTY) sat out the LSU game due to some technicality (long distance phone calls from his hotel room while in Hawaii).
LSU won the game by 2 pts.

It was a great win, but with a full roster they likely beat us comfortably.

No one was beating the UNLV Rebels that year. They pasted Duke by 30 in the final.

Never felt that team had a true leader unlike the year before that was less talented but had Ricky Blanton.

GT was really good. Could have gone either way.

That game still haunts me.

I think we could have made the Final Four that year. LSU beat UNLV the year before and the year after, but it probably wasn’t happening in 1990.
