How did Skenes not end up at a powerhouse to begin with? Dude is just nasty.

This guy should have been at LSU or Vandy, or Florida, etc… from the get go.

Many factors. Baseball recruiting isn’t like other sports.
Or he just wanted to join the military

Stone Cold Skenes spikes the ball for out 3!

He was recruited as a catcher in high school and was not highly ranked at all.
The write up on him as a recruit on perfect game’s website is not kind to him at all.

As other posters have said, a lot of baseball recruiting is just simply different. It’s not just talent acquisition, it is also why baseball has such a unique farm system compared to other pro sports.
Who knows what it was, but maybe the AFA did him some wonders by physical development (outside of baseball) that are clearly paying dividends within the sport. While the military academies aren’t as funded in a strength program dictated to the sport, the physical nature of being in one of them is undeniable.
Maybe that’s what partly let Skenes go nuts

Announcers explained it earlier

Recruiting baseball is hard. Think about how many guys LSU has had recently that haven’t worked out, all while pulling in top 5 recruiting classes. It’s hard to evaluate some of these guys in high school.

By attending the Air Force Academy, he didn't commit to time in the service?

First two years are free. If you show up for your junior year, you can’t quit without owing them some time. Graduates have a five-year service commitment.

He comes from a military family and was raised to do the same

Option is still open, too. If baseball doesn’t work out (but it will) he can still go to Officer Training School (as long as he stays for his degree) until age 39.

No. It’s when you attend beyond the second year that it is then required (minus exception granted by the Secretary of the [insert branch]) that you serve time.

Maybe he didn’t start on the roids until college

Air Force is a powerhouse. For academics and military career.
Must have decided he would rather go MLB than military
Also under Trump you could opt out to play professional sports if you graduated from an academy. I think the military was looking to rethink that.

2 kids from Parkway a few years ago weren't highly recruited, Eric Brown SS went to Coatal Carolina and was a 1st round MLB draft pick last year and Amani Larry went to a Comunity College in Mississippi then went to UNO and is now tearing it up as the starting 2nd baseman for Miss State. Hindsight says these guys should have been in the SEC from the start but recruiting high school kids is hard

Steven Strasburg is a great example of this. Barely any offers out of HS, so he goes to San Diego St and ends up throwing 100+

Hurd had a scholarship offer to play catcher going into his Jr year and then stepped on the Mount and everyone went of frick.
