The #Ravens applied the non-exclusive franchise tag on Lamar Jackson. That comes with a $32.4 million salary for 2023 and allows Jackson, for the first time in his career, to negotiate with other teams.

All of that for a 1-3 career playoff record.

Would be so dumb. The Falcons need a lot more than an injury prone QB.

So I guess the Ravens think 2 guaranteed firsts is better than what they could get in a trade because this move will likely make Lamar feel even more disrespected. If he has to stay in Baltimore he probably ain't gonna be happy.

On-field production would almost be secondary to the buzz that Lamar would create in the town. The Braves and Georgia football are a juggernaut and the Hawks have Trae Young. What does the Falcons have to get the city of Atlanta excited about them? If they don't make a big move, they're going to risk becoming an afterthought in the town.

Know how to avoid being an afterthought? Win. Know how to win? Don't do stupid shite like guarantee $250M to a QB whose best football is already behind him.

non-exclusive tag was the right move. Lamar thinks the Ravens are trying to short change him, let him talk with other teams, so he can see he isn't getting the magic number he thinks he's gonna get.

This is the right move for the Ravens.

he wants a fully guaranteed 230+mill contract like Deshaun.

The Ravens are not stupid like the Browns.

let the league set the market and then see if you want to match.

How much did he lose by not taking the contract last year? He got greedy

This move tells me there's a 0% chance Lamar is a Raven this season. I feel like someone who is desperate for a QB is gonna step in and try to nab him

You are right, he won’t be a raven. The chiefs are sending Mahommes to the ravens for Lamar and two 1st rounders.

Smart move by the Ravens, Lamar can look around and see what he’s worth.

Either some team is stupid and drops boats of cash on him, crippling their future and improving the Raven’s draft capital or he finds out he isn’t worth what he thought.

That's an interesting thought. My first impression was that this move made it more likely that he was a Raven. The reason is that the cost to negotiate with another team would be very high as they would have to meet his contract demand and invest two first rounders. Lamar won't be able to really see what his value is in the open market, so my suspicion is that his next move to gain leverage would be to hold out. Once he does that, the Ravens will have to either trade him or sign him to a deal. All that said, I think it is a leverage play that everyone knew was coming. It is more the next step than a definitive one. How do you see it?

This is exactly what the Ravens should do. If he wants all that money, here is his chance to go get it, and the Ravens can get two first round picks in exchange.
