One thing about 9/11 was how empty the flights were. What the hell was flying like back then.

AA11: 76 passengers on a plane that carries 215
UA175: 51 passengers on a plane that carries 215
AA77: 53 passengers on a plane that carries 200
UA93: 33 passengers on a plane that carries 200

Can't remember the last time I was on a flight that wasn't packed.

Sometimes I think I want flight prices to rise high enough to keep out the trash, but they always find a way on the planes

no they haven't, they're doing everything they can to get available seats to sell, can't get airplanes delivered fast enough or new pilots hired and trained fast enough

People cite pent up demand due to Covid, but I don’t see this trend slowing down anytime in the next few years or ever.

We're just starting to enter stagflation territory. Once Unemployment starts rising and we enter a Recession (or rather, one the administration will admit), they aren't going to have much choice.

I will fly +/-150 flights this year. Broadly speaking, yes flights have been really full. I believe there are still less seats available than pre pandemic. Part of that is due to retired aircraft and part due to reduced staff. Heck I think United even is pushing their Union to lower requirements for pilots. Couple that with an economy that is overspending and it makes for full flights.

My flight from key west to Dallas was overbooked by 17 people. It was a damn mess.

As the poster above me said airlines in the past few years have consolidated flights where they can due to staffing issues etc...

Flying out of New Orleans the last two years there would be 5-6 direct flights to a city where there are now maybe 2-3.

This is not the reason. I fly monthly to Houston from NOLA and it has been not matter when outside of Tuesday mornings. Something else is going on.

Agreed. I make the same trip monthly and all of a sudden prices are way up and flight availability is way down. Rental cars are the same.

ETA. When I say “all of a sudden,” I mean in the last two weeks.

It’s not uncommon for flights to be oversold but key west has a real short runway and if you have to take extra fuel (weight) to avoid bad weather enroute you’re really limited on how many people you can carry and that’s hard to plan for more than a day or so out.

My flight to Houston from NOLA Tuesday was only 50% filled. It was luxurious. But that is my first flight in 2 years that was not full.

I fly every three days and you are correct. Flights are booked solid. Flew from Spokane this morning to DFW - 100% full. Last week to Tampa - 100% full, so on and so on. Frustrating that most of the time now all of first class is sold out solid. Even to smaller destinations.

Airlines are private businesses, I may not like it but I get it.

Try booking anything for leisure. Prices are sky high and good flights are nearly impossible to find. I hate flying commercial but I'm destined to do so until I hit the lottery.

I heard something the other day that people are traveling more now than any time pre Covid.

That’s not true, I read our research analyst’s weekly flight tracker. We’re still below 2019 flight levels.
