Another kicker, you do not have to be injured on duty. You can go on vacation and get injured. When you ets, you can claim that and get service connected on it.

All discharges are binding on the VA. A dishonorable is the only one that you can’t receive the benefits. An OTH and they will do a character of discharge and decide if you qualify. All others and you can get them. Also, if you get a dishonorable, but have multiple periods, then you are only barred from disability for things only in the dishonorable period.

Not really true. High deductible plan with a medical savings account that is tax free that you can roll over every year, at a tune of more than $7k for a family, currently. And no, once your kids are in second-ish grade, they're not germ factories going to urgent care twice a month.
But hey, think of all those transgender surgeries your insurance premiums could be subsidizing! Do your part

You can also be a reservist and collect VA, go active duty, suspend VA, then recollect after active period. Which is weird asf, but our staff at WWBN were reservists.

This is probably the largest slice of the entire pie of scams

There are tons of options for vets to find help both for mental and physical issues.
They have lifetime benefits for treatment too.
frick the VA.

If I were king, vets have $0 medical and education costs for themselves and their families the rest of their lives. If they fight in war, no housing costs either.
It’s much less about paying them but is about honoring them. We should do more.

These can be bought on the open market under the age of 60 on the Obama exchange?
I've been in HSA HDHP plans for years, I'm aware of how they operate.
But once you check out of working (under the various sanctioned retirement ages), I don't find options. You can lol at me, or you can help me.
Please educate me, educate us all.

Obviously more needs to be done because the suicide rate is as high as it is.

The VA in NOLA is actually really good.
That is actually quite encouraging to hear.

I've not used them but once as I've had full private insurance for almost the entire time and won't take resources away from those that do not have other insurance.
Same. I do a yearly exam at the VA and I'll say this its gotten much better.
A couple of things, the WW2 and Korea guys are gone and the system is able to focus on younger vets.
There are plenty of services for vets, but if the vet doesnt go get it then its on him/her.

What more should we do?
1 - Eliminate the VA or at least every type of surgery bc they'd frick up lancing a boil.
2 - update their payment computer system. Even as technology challenged as I am, I don't remember how to use a 1982 computer system.
3 - More free shite

44 a day and about 3 times the non veteran average, and most of those are combat vets.
I went to Iraq (first time) in 2003 for 14 months. We did a week long left seat right seat with the new unit and got on a plane and went home. No briefing about resources available or time to to decompress, just a quick blood pressure check and see ya. And the people that were struggling just wanted to go on leave.
My last deployment, 2021, was 9 months, it was mandatory to do a Behavioral Health assessment, a full medical screen and a chance to talk to a doctor (not a PA).
Instead of ignoring issues the system finally figured if you get out in front of this stuff its more helpful and less expensive long term.

depending on where the Vet is, the VA is a crap shoot on quality of care. the VA in Mobile fricking sucks, but Biloxi and Birmingham aren't bad.
the VA needs a lot of work - not saying it is all bad, but experiences with them and my Dad as he has gotten older and his health has declined made shortfalls glaring.
i do not, obviously, have the answers - and I will say since my dad moved from Mobile to Birmingham, his quality of care here is exponentially better than it was.

had friends kill themselves in 2011, 2015, and like three in 2019 so this topic is near and dear. thats not counting the guys who have dropped off the face of the fricking earth.
lol yeah that was close to my experience 5 years or so later, we had some retarded power point debriefs by SNCOs about resources that nobody paid attention to because we wanted to get the frick out and go home. plus i was an attachment from another unit, so when it came to other stuff they were like 'youll get that at your home unit' which of course never happened.
i dont get lifetime health care and all that shite. dont think ive ever actually been in a VA hospital that wasn't on a base.

My Dad is a Vietnam veteran. He goes to the VA in NOLA and has nothing but good things to say about them. They even pay him mileage to go to and from the VA doctor and dentists. My Mom was also able to get CHAMP VA secondary insurance to Medicare as the spouse of a vet and had little to no out of pocket cost with CHAMP VA as secondary.
