There is some finality with the suicides but the guys that disappeared bother me the most.

Yeah it was terrible. WHen you demob now you will be a the demob site for 5 to 7 days so there is no need to shortcut the process.

If you did a tour in Iraq you qualify. At least go register and get a physical.

In fact most of us are completely unaware of the things that our vets go through...they suffer through things we can't even conceive. Sometimes, completely alone.

Absolutely. This is heartbreaking. (A subject that should get a lot more attention from tGoobermint and WTP.)

Have NO idea why your thread is down-voted.

Combat vet here. There’s plenty, and more than necessary

Speaking of vets

Does every Vet start filing for disability immediately after discharge?

Typically yes. I'll retire this summer after 24 yrs and will start drawing disability immediately. I'm on the hook for at least 90% based on a med board I barely beat 4 yrs ago.

Great point. VA bennies/resources are disproportional.

Vets comprise two separate groups.

1) Combat vets and intimate support who've directly/indirectly experienced life-changing physical AND mental trauma (both injured and non-injured)

2) Back up, Reserves, Bureaucratic

The former have truly made incredible sacrifices and deserve the full Fugazy treatment and bennies

The latter have not "earned" anywhere near the Bennies they wound up receiving. (just like most bureaucratic gubmint "Lifers")

I went to Iraq (first time) in 2003 for 14 months. We did a week long left seat right seat with the new unit and got on a plane and went home.

No briefing about resources available or time to to decompress, just a quick blood pressure check and see ya. And the people that were struggling just wanted to go on leave.

Respect. And thanks for weighing in.

The Mainstream controls even this narrative...

That means political photo ops will be magnified while even the most "mundane" details of your experience and guys who are used, discarded and forgotten like pawn pieces on a chessoard mean little to the Public at Large (other than to close family, friends, and *other* combat vets.)

I left the service in 99 after six years of duty in the Army. I had never heard of VA disability until the last couple of years. It wasn't really a thing back then, but apparently now the military is like going to VA school on how you can max out your benefits.

Like someone else said, I got my GI Bill and a VA loan. Those two things have served me very well in my life.

I think veterans get more than enough.

It's getting to where veterans want free snowballs and discounted concrete.

There are tons of options for vets to find help both for mental and physical issues. They have lifetime benefits for treatment too. What more should we do?

Not to sound condescending but have you ever dealt with the VA? My father has struggled with various forms of cancer from Agent Orange for 28 years. Had he received treatment all these years from the VA he would have died at 53. Thanks to his insurance through his employer a cancer guru up at Vanderbilt has somehow kept him alive. I agree with some of what you say but still the same dealing with the VA is just like the Army….. hurry up and wait.

I wouldn't be opposed to having a "Vets" board. A place for vets to go when they need help.

Nah.

PT is all the therapy I need. You seen the fricking weirdos over there? Nothing better to make me feel better than to interact with those idiots.

I think we should drop the VA completely.

Bid out insurance from all the big private insurance companies and provide that instead. You could get a killer price for all vets and it would be much better care.

That would help a ton.

Breaking News: The VA sucks.

It's government-run, people. What else did you expect?

The VA is staffed by unionized federal employees and it's virtually impossible to hold them accountable unless their behavior is outright illegal or past the point of egregious (and can be proved). Couple this with managers getting pressure from congress and the public/vets groups to provide better service. It's a combination for the disaster that the VA is.

This is happening but no the way you may think.

Some departments are just too expensive for a general hospital footprint. Like Oncology/cancer treatment. Most VAs send the vet the private sector route for specialty stuff. Plus they cant keep staff the private sector pay is way better.
