Dad gave my sister and I the choice of wedding or $$$. She chose the big wedding. Divorced in 12 years, not that it had a bearing on the break up. I chose a small family wedding. He gave us the difference based on pricing at the time. Mom tried to talk me out of it, but we chose that option for numerous reasons. Used that money and an equal amount from my husband as a downpayment on our first home. No regrets.

You realize there is zero causation there, right ? Not that you were claiming there was- but in my anecdotal experience, the size/cost of the wedding has no impact on the duration/quality of the marriage…. Would be cool to see a study on it though .

I'm all for eloping and throwing a good ole' fashioned cajun shindig (iced down beer in a pirogue, etc.) Financially, money will be best spent this way.
However, an important question is....what does your daughter want? Does she have any say? Just saying, bc some daughters see things very differently than Daddy's do.

You’re goddamn right it is when I’m paying for AYCE pulled pork, brisket, ribs, sides AND the salad bar

Any “union” of a couple should be accepted by the law and should get the same financial benefits; However, the classification as “marriage” by deviants and miscreants is sacrilegious and should only be adapted by those of Christian faith.
It’s your money and your soul. Do anything you want with it except adapting the name of a Christian tradition. That doesn’t belong to you.

If I make it to the pearly gates, the fact that we didn't get married by a preacher will be in the appendix of the book of things I need to explain

Marriage isn’t solely a Christian tradition
Based on your logic…you also saying Jewish people can’t call themselves married?

I think that makes sense. People who want to be married and don't really care about the wedding are probably statistically more likely to stay married.

This is what’s wrong with the world today. We’re getting away from what’s always worked.
Have a wedding.
Walk during graduation.
Attend school in person.
Goodness gracious.

Elope.
Mrs. Tantal and I got married by an Elvis impersonator in Vegas, changed clothes, had a few drinks, then went zip-lining down Freemont Street. Whole thing....airfare, hotel, food, drinks, Elvis, etc. was $1,200.
Another friend booked a beach wedding in Mexico and negotiated a group rate. Sent invitations to everyone he wanted, but they had to pay for their own trip. Everyone went down 2 days before the wedding, then left the day after while he and his wife stayed for another week for their honeymoon.

Subtle, “I think I can convince her to not have a wedding” brag post

The smart thing is to take the money and save it for a big purchase
I never saw the purpose of a big wedding except to show off, i did not want a big wedding so we went to the courthouse
One of my good friends eloped, and that was great -I think our other friends were angry with her bc there was no party and stuff - I was thankful I didn’t have to buy a dress I’d wear once, plan parties she didn’t want, and do all that junk - especially since she didn’t want that

We did JOP in front of three people.
We’ve talked about it a few times. We both always say how glad we are we didn’t go through all the BS that went with a wedding.
Her dad wanted to pay for it, we started making a list of people and decided within an hour that it wasn’t going to work. Got pretty obvious that we wouldn’t really know half the people there, the other half would be mostly acquaintances and the people we wanted to be there wouldn’t give a frick either way.
Rings, ceremony, paperwork, and all cost us about $500 out of pocket. She picked the ring, I picked the band. I don’t even wear the original band. I just wear this silicone ring that cost $12 on Amazon.
If the wedding is the best day of the marriage, I got some bad news.
ETA - We’ve both forgotten our anniversary the past three years now. No we aren’t just roommates, we both (luckily) share the same ideals when it comes to dates. We get each other presents all the time, but rarely does it coincide with a specific day of the year.

After being married and going through the wedding, the elope thing sounds better.
Back then I think we spent $5,000, which could have go to other things.

Both of my siblings have gotten married before me (and one has divorced). My mom is telling me to just elope. My girlfriend has been in a bunch of wedding… she would want to elope too.

With the way people approach marriage these days, I'll be advising my kid to elope or go to the JOP. If he even chooses to get married.
Besides throwing gobs of money for a really nice wedding seems like such a waste. And if you don't spend the money, chances are the wedding looks trashy.
