Will there ever be another Tony Gwynn?

Gwynn's bat to ball skills were incredible. In a 3 outcome era where seemingly nobody feels too badly about striking out anymore, there aren't many guys like a Gwynn who will contort themselves to put the bat on the ball. The guy flat out refused to strikeout

@CodifyBaseball

Tony Gwynn had 45 games with at least 4 hits and only 34 multi-strikeout games. Just totally insane.

@CodifyBaseball

Tony Gwynn hit .415 against Greg Maddux and (expletive) did not strike out even once in 107 plate appearances!

quote:

Tony Gwynn faced Maddux, Glavin, Smoltz and Pedro Martinez of total 323 times in his career and struck out 3 times
.

Gwynns career worst strikeout rate was 6.9% in 1988 when he struck out 40 times in 578 at bats. From 1991-1999, he struck out more than 20 times once. That was 1997 when he struck out 28 times and hit .372

Today Tony Gwynn would be coached to swing for the fences

Analytics hate singles

He isn’t quite Tony Gwynn, but Luis Arraez is the closest current comparison.

Maybe, but the same analytics LOVE OBP. Gwynn would be the guy that uses the shifts to hit .500

He had the lowest strikeout rate last year at 7.1%. Slightly worse than Gwynn's worst year but still a Gwynn-esque stat line. And to Cosmo's point, the Twins promptly traded him after the season.

Best thing they could do for MLB is move all the fences back 20-30'. More doubles, triples, and inside the park jobs. Those are the most exciting plays in baseball other than a triple play. This nonsense they implemented this season with the 2 pickoff/step off max per batter (3rd attempt is a balk) and the larger bases is DUMB.

A big part of K rates now is the pitching being faced as well, not just the hitter’s approach in a vacuum. I think it’s unlikely we ever see K rates that low for a large sample size hitter again

Willians Astudillo “Tortuga”
28 Ks in 588 PAs

And he mop up pitches.

Also read he could have went 0-1199 at the end of his career and still finished his career with a .300 batting average

Pete Rose could have continued playing and gone 750 for 750 and Tony Gwynn still would have a higher career average.

S Kwan with the Tribe doesn’t strike out much. In no way am I comparing him to Gwynn just making an observation.

Saw Gwynn play the Astros in the Dome … was very surprised to see how rotund he was in person as a major leaguer

Kwan could be that guy, but he's not there yet.
