Has anybody hired these guys before. I have a small project at home and could use some skilled labor help. Do they do high quality work for a cheap price? Is it safe to bring them to your house?

Just don’t hire them to write five essays.

Would never :)

And most of them aren’t Mexicans.

You are asking an impossible question to answer correctly. One group may do great work and the group sitting beside them may be useless.

Do you have a friend who can pretend to be an INS agent about 10 minutes before quitting time? Could save you some money.

I had to make a Lowe’s run one day while I was moving and pulled up in a U-Haul. I thought they were going to swarm the truck.

I don't think it's about cost so much as immediate need and specific circumstances.

Back in the day you didn't have NextDoor or Facebook or whatever where you could pretty quickly find some one off Hispanic dude who came recommended for small jobs.

But yeah if you want work done today and know what needs to be done, it's probably a good option*

*Assuming they're legally authorized to work in the United States

My experience with a lot of these guys is they want a day rate regardless of hours worked. Like $150-$200 a day or something like that.

What a day means to you and them might differ. Getting all of that ironed out can be tough with the language barrier.

I guess if they have their own transportation the worst they could do is just twist off if it doesn’t work out.

Or come back and steal all your shite.

Your risk, plan accordingly.

Hire them...if you want to be part of the problem.

Do they mostly speak basic english? Does ICE raid every once in awhile? I've always thought about hiring some for a day job. Local yokels can jerk you around with estimates, times available, etc.

if they were truly skilled why would they be outside of HD instead of working already?

I hired three guys a few years ago to lay some sod at my new house in the summer. We negotiated the rate before they left the lot. They followed me to my house did the work and I was pleased. I gave them all the Gatorade they wanted and even bought their lunch when finished.

I agree! It's clowns like you who destroy our country from the inside. Will you ask them for proof of citizenship before you hire them?

I’ve never heard of an “ICE raid” in decades. Under the current administration I would imagine those are a low priority as long as you aren’t doing drug running for the cartels.

To me, communication is the biggest challenge. If you hire a group sometimes a lead guy is the translator.

There’s some risk there but even the local handyman who is legal is going to make a claim against your homeowners if they fall off your roof and break their back.

Do you realize that hiring these people is hurting Americans.

Maybe because they're not eligible for legal employment

Skilled work--like construction? Prolly not. Yard work, yes, painting possibly. But not electrical, plumbing. Maybe roofing, if you had a bilingual bossman.
