NY Post writer breaks down how Nantz is a self-absorbed hardo who won't put anybody else over, but Romo is also slipping and getting shittier at broadcasting games, so much so that CBS had to meet with him before the 2022 season about his broadcasting.

CBS execs tried intervention to address Tony Romo’s slippage in booth

By

During the last offseason, CBS Sports executives recognized that some of the luster of Tony Romo’s NFL analysis had faded. As a result, they staged something of an intervention, The Post has learned.

In an effort to have Romo focus more on being fully prepared and to help him find a way to mesh better with his broadcast partner, Jim Nantz, executives including CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus and CBS’ lead NFL game producer, Jim Rikhoff, flew on separate trips to Romo’s Dallas home, according to sources.

“To call this an intervention is a complete mischaracterization, we meet regularly with our on-air talent,” CBS Sports spokeswoman Jen Sabatelle said.
Whatever one chooses to call it, the executives reviewed tapes with Romo, went to dinner, and discussed the broadcast in an attempt to return him to the form that made him a media sensation in his first three years on air, beginning in 2017, and culminated in what was at the time the largest contract in sportscasting history, a 10-year deal for a total of $180 million.

While the get-togethers were said to have gone well, they did not improve the broadcast as Nantz and Romo continued to go in the wrong direction, much the same way as Nantz and his previous partner, Phil Simms, went backward.

Romo has received heat from TV sports insiders, media critics and social media. The Romo-Nantz combo will have even more relevance a year from now because Super Bowl LVIII, which will be played in Las Vegas on Feb. 11, 2024, will air on CBS.

This offseason, CBS officials plan to try to again address the issues with the network’s lead team.

Funny how Romo being so annoying now and Greg Olsen being a relative “no name” has made Aikman popular. Nobody liked Aikman before. Or Buck for that matter.

Nantz was the one way off last weekend, kept calling plays 1st down when they were a yard short while Romo giggled and offered, "how awesome was that play?"

people don't watch the game for the commentating anymore.

I'd say frick it if I were him.

and people don't give a frick about coaching philosophies.

so, who are the execs listening to? Some miserable guy on Twitter that started a poll.

Checks out.

I honestly think you could put 2 normal dudes in the booth and react to the game/complaining about officials and it would be just as good or better

People were wowed by Romo at first because he would read the formation and predict the play.

He was a one trick pony and relatively bad in all other aspects of announcing. He seems like a good dude, but he's pretty annoying in the booth.

Plus he talks now like he just rolled out of bed on a meth bender and smoked two packs of Camel Straights on the way to the stadium.

Back in the day (90’s/early 2000’s), fox sports world would broadcast EPL games and have two opposing fans talking shite the whole time. It was great.
I think Barstool should bring it if they ever get a contract.

They are absolutely clueless and out of touch. It’s bizarre.

A broadcast team is not going to make or break someone from watching a game.

I was never a fan of Romo, primarily because I did not think he had a good voice for broadcasting, but going back and watching the 2018 AFC champ game (NE vs Chiefs in Arrowhead), Romo was FAR more under control and didn't talk every bleeding second of the broadcast and didn't do all the stupid "oooohhhhs and ahhhhs' like he does now.

LINK

He was actually much better than I remember and it was so obvious now that he had just come out of the league.

He has regressed incredibly since then.
