Netflix cracks down on password sharing in March, but there could be a loophole

If you’re sharing your Netflix password, get ready to pay more.
In a letter to its shareholders, the streaming company said it will start blocking subscribers from sharing passwords in March. Plus, Netflix plans to roll out a paid-sharing plan.
Netflix says it knows some people may cancel, but it’s expecting other households to activate accounts and counterbalance that revenue loss.
The streaming service had a similar pilot program in Latin America where users could add a sub-account for an additional $3 a month.
Subscribers in the program found a way around the extra fees.
“They have found the loophole that mobile devices did not count as separate locations,” says Sarah Saril, the tech deals and streaming reporter at Insider. “So people were able to get around it by still sharing an account, but streaming on their phone or on their tablet.
You can still use that to Airplay on to a TV. However, if users were trying to watch Netflix directly on their TV or on their desktop, they then would report to Netflix that they were in a different location. We won't know if this will work in the States until it rolls out here, but there might be a loophole for us.”
This all comes as Netflix fights for dominance in a post-pandemic world. After getting a big bump in subscribers at the start of the pandemic, it has struggled to maintain its streaming superiority as competitors crowd in. The company estimates 100 million households use the service without paying for it. Now, Netflix wants those password pirates to pay up.

They have no way to track it regardless.

I imagine they're using IP addresses to track it, but does that mean people who go on vacation or travel for work can't use their Netflix sub? No idea how that'll work.

I'm an over-the-road truck driver who uses Netflix on my tablet while out on the road while my kids watch Netflix at home on 3 different TVs. I wonder how that will effect me.

I work out of town while family uses it at home, if they expect me to pay more than what I am already paying to continue to use the service, then I will be dropping it completely and just pirate whatever I want from Netflix, frick em.

You would think they would've thought about situations like ours.

There’s been an update from Netflix, but here’s the most irritating part

People who aren't part of your household will need to use their own account to watch Netflix. Devices that are not part of your primary location may be blocked from watching Netflix.

The real cheat code with Netflix is just cancelling when you run out of stuff to watch. Same for all the other services. Just rotate one service at a time

So people are going to get all ruffled up over 3 dollars?

Obviously not people like yourself. Be sure not to get ruffled over their next price hike either.

I already pay like $21, I'm not paying another 3 just to be able to use the service I pay for away from my house.

I pay for 4 screens. If I have less than 4 screens running at the same time, they shouldn't have any problem. I also have more than 4 devices connected just in my house.

I assure you I will not get ruffled. If the price raises above what I think I am getting i will cancel my subscription.

I’m literally watching the brand new Pamela Anderson documentary on my sisters Netflix right now

Even if the loophole works in the states, I wonder about casting onto a Chromecast while on vacation. Just seems like a complete misunderstanding of the general audience and how we use the product; it’s a tertiary option when I’m at home and have access to watch live tv or a better streaming service on my larger screen, it’s a better option when I’m at work or on vacation (in the car or at a rental property) and can watch in a desktop, phone, or cast it onto a larger screen

This pretty much right here. We pay for the max amount of screens already.
We have our account linked to the MILs house and use it when we go to visit w/our 18 month old which is fairly often b/c she's only 25 minutes away. If that gets blocked we'll just cut Netflix out completely. I'm not going to bother trying to use a work around when I have a kid screaming at me to put on a cartoon. I'll just use one of the many other apps that don't pull this shite.
Hell, Spectrum let's me use their app anywhere in the country on a streaming device and damn near every channel aside from the locals and Fox owned stations work on that app when outside of my house. Even w/that caveat, if a channel that doesn't let me watch outside my home has it's own app I can still view their content away from home on a TV w/o having to cast it from a phone.

What about those of us who have grandfathered service through a mobile carrier.
We have five lines spread out over three locations.

Your IP gives up your location.
TVs are treated differently than computers, tablets and phones. Hulu lets me watch TV on my computer and iPad, but not on my TCL TV, because I'm four miles away from my ex-wife, who uses Hulu on the TV. I'm guessing that's what Netflix is going to do too.
