officers immediately treat non compliance and evasion as an admission of guilt and dramatically escalate the situation, and some people are capable of fighting and fighting and fighting through tasers and pepper spray. the officers will go through any means necessary to get compliance. if you were the officer and every tool on you to get compliance is exhausted what do you do?
If officers are taught to do this (they aren't), then blow the whole thing up.

so you just let a murder suspect go? what if he turns around and kills someone you know?

There’s rumor floating that Nichols was involved with one of the detainers wife
If so, this thing will cost Memphis 8 figs
8 figures is already a given without that.

Find another job
This wasn’t a big dude like George Floyd. This guy was 150 lbs. These cops were just terrible cops.

Was this guy a murder suspect? Like I said, this ain't the one to try to make this argument

so you treat one suspect different from another?
Posted on 1/27/23 at 10:26 pm to DVinBR
frick it, you're right. These guys did everything by the book. These murder charges are total bullshite.

i want to hear your opinion about what the officers should have done to achieve compliance
Posted on 1/27/23 at 10:29 pm to DVinBR
Not kill the guy for starters

quote:I doubt they're taught to do it, but clearly they're not taught how not to do it well-enough. I forget who the guy is now, but one of the most popular trainers of police, goes out of his way to frame interactions more along the lines of combat in war, than dealing with citizens.

One of my best friend's brother in law was going through the academy in Tennessee, and he ended up dropping out after they kept drilling in the idea "you have to be prepared to shoot a kid." I think it might have been by that same guy. Of course, that could happen, but when you're drilling it in the trainees heads that that's what you have to be prepared to do, then it's no wonder they escalate these interactions with adults.

Why TF are you calling him a kid? He’s 29 years old, a grown arse man. He’s not a kid. Are you trying to illicit a specific emotional response calling a grown man a kid?
Maybe I'm old, but he seemed like a young man/kid in the first video. Seems like an ok one who made a bad decision to run and some dickhead cops gave him the ultimate punishment without cause. We all know what would have saved him, but in the moment he appeared scared more than aggressive. This was a bad deal all around.

Im not condoning what the cops did. It was atrocious. I’m condoning people calling this 29 year old grown man a kid. You want to think he’s a kid for some reason, which is weird to me.

Dude they pulled him over for something that MPD literally never pulls people over for.
They alleged reckless driving as the reason for the stop. Have you lived in Memphis? MPD literally could not give less of a shite about reckless driving.

Yea like at least 50% of these types of videos feature one cop pulling a perp to the right while another beats the shite out of the perp for disobeying his command to go left.

Seems like an irrelevant concern. Young and old is relative. He's not a kid by definition, but I saw a lot of kid in his behavior. If you think he was killed without warrant I don't know why what people say to describe has to do with it.

When that officer started throwing haymakers while the other two officers are holding the guy up, that was when the line was officially crossed. Not to mention the kicks while he was on the ground. Baton to the upper body while he was on the ground. None of that was acceptable.
Pepper spray, taser, wrestling with him and some controlled targeted strikes to gain compliance are OK. This was not that.

Lemme guess another shithead who'd still be alive if they followed simple instructions

There's more anger in this thread than in Memphis.

I know for a fact that cops watch the Kyle Dinkheller video before/during their training for traffic stops. For the uninitiated, Dinkheller was a cop in Georgia that gets executed in cold blood by Andrew Brannan, a Vietnam Vet off his rocker during a stop. Video is out there, but you've been warned.
Imagine you see that and you realize you're going to be in that position of walking up to a car every time you conduct a stop. You're going to be on edge, hostile, and ready to pop off. Without knowing a thing about you, the cop is thinking you, Joe Blow, might be a cop killer and that's how they approach you.
