On paper, Waterworld has way more potential at being an incredible blockbuster film than Steven King's average-at-best entertaining short story/novella. Case in point, in the same book of Shawshank Redemption, there are two much more riveting stories, The Body and Apt Pupil. The Body became the beautifully made "Stand by Me". And Apt Pupil was made into the terrible "Apt Pupil".
It just so happened that Waterworld was grossly miss cast and terribly implemented, whereas Shawshank benefitted from fantastic performances by the entire cast and perfectly directed and edited.

Didn’t Waterworld do much better at the box office than Shawshank?

Yeah, but at around 10x the production budget.

Costner would have ruined Shawshank. He would have ruined Tombstone too if he was in it.

Costner directed and produced Waterworld and undertook one of the most difficult film shoots in modern cinematic history.
After his success with Dances With Wolves, Costner was obviously in the mood to be the great American film creator and he had all the leverage and power at the time to make that happen.
I still like Waterworld. I saw it in the theater and still watch it every time it's on.
Costner had full control in that picture and would not have had it on Shawshank. As alluded to in a post before, I don't think Costner regrets one thing about making Waterworld, much else in his career.
For the most part, once he was an established star, I think he made exactly what he wanted to.
Now... Connery turning down Gandalf... Now that's a regret... One to the tune of $400M and a decision that basically ended one of the great movie star careers of the last 60 yrs.

Jim Carrey in Cable Guy thought it RULED!
And ironically Cable Guy is another movie that as much better than all of the hate it got when first released.
Cable Guy might be my favorite Jim Carrey movie.
I went with my brother to see Cable Guy in the theater. He howled with laughter all the way through.
The three other people in there didn't laugh at all and didn't like us very much

Waterworld was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Loved it. I actually don't know anyone that hates Waterworld.

Do you guys have a nostalgia factor or something? Compared to other post-apocalyptic movies like I am Legend, The Road, The Book of Eli, Snowpiercer, Mad Max Fury Road, and others it is bad. I'd say Reign of Fire was even better than The Postman.

I can't see Costner losing some of those fights with the Sodomites. I'd think he'd do a Steven Seagal and demand that he win every confrontation with them.

The postman and book of Eli are the most realistic world view IMO of post apocalyptic US.
Postman was just too damn long. Like almost all of Costner movies that I don't watch.
Costner in a sports rile though, crushes it

It is my opinion that if he would have taken the Shawshank role over the waterworld role he would have been regarded as the GOAT actor of all time .
He's done alright and is sort of a national icon now.
