Henry Fonda
Marlon Brando
Paul Newman
Morgan Freeman
Tom Hank
Denzel Washington

and so many more that IMHO are better than Costner.

Bellows' performance is one of my favorite things ever, but Pitt would've been amazing in that role.

Costner isn’t a great actor. He is OK but tends to drag down a lot of what he does compared to the other actors involved.

Tim Robbins gave a much better performance as Andy than Costner would have been capable of.

Silverado and The Big Chill.

(He is a corpse in The Big Chill because Kasdan left his one scene on the cutting room floor, hence casting him in Silverado the next year)

But doesn't it always work that way? When you hear about who else was considered or passed on a role in a popular movie, you can never quite imagine that person in the role anyway. At least that's how I feel 90% of the time.

Actually, with this one, I think Costner could have worked just as well. I like the cast as is, but could definitely picture Costner in that role.

Dufresne might have been low key, but he absolutely was NOT the least bit timid at any point in the film. IMO, he’s one of the most admirable and courageous characters in film history.

He didn’t breakdown the first night at Shawshank like Red expected, fought back against the Sisters (even taunted them), never moped around in spite of having a very promising future unjustly stripped from him, defiantly turned the music up when the guards told him to cut it off, and had the balls to risk his life escaping through a tight shitpipe.
