When your interview doesn't go as planned

Octavia Spencer says she experienced ‘more racism’ in LA than Alabama
quote:
The topic came about when the actress spoke fondly of her upbringing in Montgomery, Alabama, which seemingly caught Maron off-guard because of stereotypes of Black people living in the deep south.
Spencer claimed, ""It’s a beautiful place and beautiful people. You know, I love being from there." Maron asked, "But it’s like, it’s heavy, man. Right?"
Breaking down the stereotype, the actress stated, "I think everywhere is heavy. Everywhere has its history. You know what I mean? It’s — I think everywhere has problems."
Though she did acknowledge, "You can’t deny that southern history is intense."
The dickhead interviewer tried and tried to get her to say "yeah 'Bama racist as hell" but no dice.
I've said for almost 20 yrs that Cali is easily the most racist part of this country.

I was bracing for her story of racism in LA (Louisiana). Glad she meant Los Angeles.

Maron watched the movie Sounder.

Those who don't cater to the establishment's head canon are clearly too 'uninformed' or self-hating.
Because they KNOW.

Some black people refuse to live on the Plantation.
I don't know about her life philosophy but in THIS instance, she did right.

I guess you've never been to Boston or Hawaii?

Boston no, Hawaii yes but only for a week. I went to hs in NEPA so I've been around the NEPA, NY & NJ areas but not up to Boston.

I've shared this story before, but I was traveling in Jackson, MS, (survived, thank you for T&P) and chatted up the barkeep one night. He was a black man from Chicago. I asked him what brought him to MS, and how he liked it. He point-blank told me he had a much better experience regarding race relations and community acceptance in MS than he ever did in Chicago. Said he wouldn't go back.

The New England area is racist AF. I've been to Hawaii but never experienced/witnessed racism.

Would have been epic if she said "well bless your heart" to his repeated attempts to get her to say something bad about 'Bama

Every southern black person who has been outside of the south knows that the south is the least racist.

Native Hawaiians despise mainlanders. Unfortunately for them, they need mainlander money so play nice to your face.
From my experience, Boston wins most racist place in the country by a longshot. Neighborhoods are still highly, highly segregated. I've spent a lot of time in Boston. Good luck finding a black person that lives north of Dorchester.

Spencer elaborated, saying, "I remember going into a shop and being followed, like, at first, I didn’t even — I was just like so excited, like just walking around, and then I realized that I was being followed."
I just assume I’m being watched by cameras or people that are in the business of loss prevention whenever I’m in a high dollar store or even in a neighborhood CVS.
I can’t imagine a reasonable mind that thinks they are being watched solely because of the color of their skin.

Maybe but I think it is the Upper east coast. Splittig hairs. The south despite what is pushed is one of the least racist areas of this country.

The South is the only place in America where large numbers of black and white people live, and work together.
Our kids play on the same teams and we spend a lot of time together.
The rest of the Nation is pretty much segregated.
