I know the article is interpreting this similarly to you. But I don’t believe they are saying that the vaccine puts you at risk. I think they are saying this variant puts the vaccinated at higher risk than other strains did.

Essentially I think they are just bending over backwards to not directly say that the vaccine doesn’t do much for this variant.

Which tracks with other highly mutative upper respiratory viruses like influenza.

Your interpretation seems right, though, I suspect the actual message here is "vaccines now do nearly nothing" which will be followed by new boosters that people are increasingly not bothering with.

They might as well just move on at this point.

Just FWIW, by "more susceptible" I don't think he meant more susceptible than the unvaxxed. I think he meant more susceptible than with previous variants.

Natural selection in a novel viral course invariably leads to variants with lower virulence, greater contagiousness/transmissibility, and lowered vax efficacy. That is exactly what we've seen with SARS-CoV-2. BA.4 and BA.5 are easier to catch, less serious when contracted, and not affected much by the current vax.

I had the same thought you did. "Depends on what the definition of "effective" is"
I heard an interview with a guy who said Fauci is really good at phrasing just right for him to wiggle out of any kind of prosecution, so don't expect much from congressional hearings.
