I am working down here for a couple weeks and want to eat where the locals eat. I’m in New Iberia during the day and staying in Lafayette. I don’t mind driving 30-45 minutes outside Lafayette for any hidden gems in smaller towns. Thanks in advance

Dupuy's in Abbeville.

If you like seafood, try to drive to Abbeville one evening and hit up Dupuy's. Pop's is really solid for po-boys as is The Villager in Maurice. Social has awesome bourbon and almost all of the entrees are very good - I'd rec either the hanger steak or burger there. For a sports bar, Pete's isn't bad at all.

Poor Boys Riverside Inn in Broussard. Short drive.

don't limit yourself the city area establishments. Go to the country and out of town areas where you can truly experience the Cajun food and way of life.
Cafe Jefferson at Rip Van Winkle Gardens has solid food and beautiful views of the Lake Peignuer which has a very cool history, Lake nearly drained due to drilling rig puncturing the salt dome below. (see pic below) LP documentary
Brenda's Diner in New Iberia has very good creole / soul food: shrimp stew, turkey wings, rice n gravy, fried chicken, etc..
R&M Boiling Point is on Hwy 90 and the boiled seafood, crabs. shrimp, crawfish, fried seadfood platter, etc...
Abbeville: Riverfront, Shucks, Dupuys,
Suire's Grocery is a 35-40 minute drive towards Kaplan, LA. One of the last places Anthony Bourdain ate when filming his show. Turtle sauce piquant is solid.
Shade Tree Cafe in Broussard is the REAL DEAL ... 219 S Eola Rd, Broussard, LA . Open from Tues ~ Fri, 11am - 2pm and 5pm - 9pm . If you go once, you'll end up going back 3-4 more times.
Don't sleep on the Breaux Bridge area Poche's Market & Restaurant and Glenda's Creole Kitchen are a must place to eat

For Lafayette proper, if you want to eat where the locals eat and have a few weeks:
1) La Fonda (more about the atmosphere and drinks than the food)
2) Judice Inn for old school burger and chips.
3) Vestal is the newest, most popular spot now for more elevated food.
4) Poor Boys Riverside Inn
5) Old Tyme Grocery for Poboys. Also, Pop's or Chris'
6) Johnson's Boucanerie for smoked meats/bbq
7) Marcellos for italian
8)Pizza is a toss up between Alesi's (old world) and Deano's (new world). Central Pizza is the newcomer and is great. Antoni's in the oil center is also awesome.
9) T-Coons or Dwyers are longtime spots for breakfast and lunch.
10) Blu Basil for Thai
11) Mazen Grill for a steak
12) Rachael's for an awesome plate lunch
13) Dwight's for Sunday bbq plate lunches
I would spend a day travelling out to Arnaudville to the Little Big Cup or Sunset to Cafe Josephine. Same goes for Dupuy's in Abbeville.
If you are in New Iberia, drive down to Cypremort Point and catch a sunset at the Bayview. It's cheap, freezer-to-fryer type foods (pretty decent burgers) at a little refueling dock, but the drinks are strong and the views are great.
There's also going to be every choice imaginable for cajun meats. Best Stop, Dons, Hebert's, Kartchners, Bourque's, NuNus. Billy's.
If you also need recommendations for a gym or personal trainer let me know

Casual spots:
Spoonbill Watering Hole
Pop’s Poboys
Central Pizza
Social Southern Table & Bar
Johnson’s Boucaniere (lunch only)
If you want a nicer spot for dinner:
Vestal
Charley G’s
Marcello’s
Cafe Vermilionville
ETA: I will also concur with others in regards to Dupuys in Abbeville and Cafe Josephine in Sunset if you’re okay with a drive. Opposite directions from Lafayette, but probably about the same distance away.
