We're not close to being in the NCAA tournament yet
We were ranked 26th in the AP poll and are the first team out on bracket matrix, so it may be closer than some think (or maybe that is what everyone thinks idk), a win at TAMU might get us ranked in the top 25 even with the loss to Kentucky

Absolutely a bad look, sucks but if we would have blown 3 of those non conference teams out we are probably sitting at high 50s and a 9/10 seed right now. But hopefully just winning and playing in the SEC can prop that number up a good bit.
Right now I think we are a tournament team, if this team is who they have been the last two games I see us getting in without much(still some) sweat. Like it was said these next two games will be crucial for the resume

Obviously they played a really weak OOC schedule, but Wake Forrest is starting to look like a solid win after the beat both Duke and VT. Kansas State also just beat Texas and is 13-1 so definitely not a bad loss.

And currently, 70 on KenPom. A&M is 75, LSU really needs to take care of business on Saturday in College Station. In fact, LSU can't really afford to lose to either A&M or Flordia b/c there is a brutal stretch after those two - #7 Bama, #22 Auburn, #8 Tenn, and then a payback game for #13 Arky.

I would be disappointed if we did not make the dance

I’d put money on it. KState loss is a wash and they’re looking great. We’ll have a good enough record with a few signature wins.

ough loss last night but what I saw was very encouraging. We should be favored in most of our home games and the bottom half of the SEC is beatable!
We were picked to finish 8th in the SEC at media days and I think after seeing and reading about the other SEC teams that's probably pretty accurate IMHO as to where we are talent-wise relative to the rest of the conference.
The would probably be akin to about 8 wins if it holds true. I would think we'd need at least 9 wins and with the poor pre-conference SOS probably 10 to get in. I see us as a bubble team right now.
I do think CMM is finding a bit more about his squad and who he needs to play more and what combinations to give us our best shot in SEC play. Let's hope that gets us the extra win or two we need.

All the road games will be a serious challenge. I see that Aggies are currently favored v LSU on Saturday, and A&M is certainly not any great shakes this season.
Also the big guns like Tennessee and Auburn will be hard to beat anywhere.

There was pretty clear top 5 in the preseason (Kentucky, Tenn., Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama). Teams 6-14 were harder to predict. Especially since 6 of those 9 teams had new head coaches and a lot of roster turnover. Thus, far, the predictions look pretty on point with the only big outliers being Missouri looks much better than predicted and A&M looks to be worse. Mississippi St looked really good against a weak non conf. schedule initially. But in the last 4 games they have looked good at all. Admittedly, their first two SEC games were against the league's two best teams, Tennessee and Alabama. However, they haven't looked like they belonged in either game (both double-digit losses). Compare that with LSU beating Arkansas and losing @ UK by only 3.
It is still VERY early, and hard to make any definitive predictions. But I think it is reasonable to say LSU is among the group that can finish in the top half of the league. If we were doing a "power rating" today I would put them at No. 7 behind the top 5 teams and Missouri (who has blown out Illinois and Kentucky in back to back games)

Eye test says no but then again I didn’t see them taking Arkansas, even without Nick smith.

LSU definitely looks it through 2 conference games, but are we definitely in the clear of NCAA stuff?

However, I think it is fair to balance that by saying Arky was missing two starters and I have to say I've not seen a team look as bad shooting 3's as they did in a long time.
And I do think we caught Kentucky at the right time, they have not been playing very well at all, I think they played better against us than a couple of other games I've seen them play but they are still a bit on the struggle bus I think.
So temper the enthusiasm just a bit, but I think we have a team that can put itself squarely on the bubble by years end and sneak in there if things go the right way.

They weren't a good 3 point shooting team with both starters. In fact, the game vs. LSU wasn't even the lowest 3 point % they've shot in a game this year. The entire focus of LSU's defense was to force Arkansas to shoot 3's...and it worked. Given it was a 3 point win even with Arkansas missing a freshman (potential) lottery pick would the outcome have been different had he played? Maybe. But it's not like LSU was very good offensively that game either.
Hard to say if LSU caught UK at a bad time. Yes, they were housed by Missouri. And yes, beating Louisville isn't impressive, but Kentucky played one of their better offensive games of the season. They shot above their average in FGs, 3 pointers and FTs. They also had their fewest turnovers of the season. Kentucky may not be a top 5 team...but they played probably as close to their best as they have all season...and still had to survive at home because LSU played their best offensive game of the year (given the opponent).
I trust LSU can do enough defensively in most games. Offense has been the issue most of the season. But even in a loss you had to be encouraged with LSU's offensive output. For reference, they went from 104 in offensive efficiency to 82 follow last night's game. I don't know if LSU can execute at that high a level night in and night out. But it was nice to see they are capable of it against a tough opponent in a tough road environment.
I don't think LSU is this good, nor do I think Kentucky is quite this good, but the feeling after last night's game was a bit like the feeling after the 2006 teams game at #2 UConn that LSU lost by 1 point. Until that game LSU was a bit up and down, and couldn't quite get over the hump against good competition. They were 8-4 entering the game. They battled in a tough road environment and lost...but in the process seemed to gain some confidence that ultimately propelled them to the SEC Championship and Final Four.
NO, I DON'T think this is a Final Four team. But maybe last night was a boost that gets everyone on the team to fully believe they are better than what everyone has thought to date.

I'm not quite sure I'm in agreement with you on this point Alt re defensive relibility. I think we can put a team out there that's better at offense with Hayes and Hannibal at guard but that compromises us a bit defensively and on the glass - which of course go hand in hand because the defensive possession does not end until you either steal or rebound the ball or a basket is made.
I also think we can put a better defensive team out there with either Justice Williams or Mwani or both out there with some length that can better defend, rebound and get to 50/50 balls which was a big issue IMHO last night - but this lineup does compromises us some on offense.
And honestly and I don't think CMM wanted to admit it and still does not - but we are better offensively with Hayes and or Hannibal than Juice and that's helped.
As for Arky's bad shooting, I was pleased we beat them but after the game my first thought was Arky did not look all that great and I would like to say it was all us, but I'd not be being honest.
Still pleased with our direction and hopeful for our future. I like CMM. Won't always rubber stamp everything he does but like the man and the coach.

Our NET is pretty terrible at 79, but a 10-8 or better conference record can remedy that beating the right teams.

Arkansas was short handed. Just not a top team (the one we played).
They lost their top bench player Brazile a few games prior for the season and he was averaging 12/6 a game off the bench and SMith has been hurt too missing games and he's one of the top starters. Basically they had zero bench against us as a result. Still more talented on paper than us but having no bench is tough to play through, they need Nick Smith back or they will certainly be losing a handful of SEC games.

I don’t see it. After next week’s UF game, LSU has a brutal 7 game stretch. Hope I’m very wrong though.

I did know they were missing two starters, still I thought they'd look better. I mean I know we were daring them to shoot 3's but that fact that you can even do that means there is something wrong. And according to Alt they weren't any better shooting 3's with the two starters they were missing playing.

The jury's still out on whether or not LSU makes a tourney this year-- only two games into the conference season
