Now that I can only play weekends, this is becoming an issue. Almost to the point of quitting.

Yesterday had a 5+ hour round yet again. Booked an $80 course so figured it’d keep riff raft away. Nope. We pulled up to #1 and immediately noticed a 4 some with two sets of clubs. After the horrific tee shots and shared drivers, lessons were being given in the fairway. Pull up to #3 and a line of carts waiting…. At the 5 hour mark we were on hole 16 and just left.

No playing through on weekends since it’s 4some after 4some.

Courses apparently can’t afford to have legit Marshall’s anymore. Just an old guy driving around leisurely in a cart picking up lost balls.

I know you can be bad and fast, but should weekend rounds require a certain level handicap? All it takes is for one or two group to ruin everything on a crowded course.

Do private clubs have this same issue? That may be my next option if not.

Was there a group in sight ahead of the group ahead of you?

Slow play is annoying, but most of the time I can see groups stacked up on all the holes I can see. The group ahead of me could speed up and save all of 3 minutes by staying on the next group's heels. If there isn't a group ahead of the group in front of you, I don't hesitate to go ask if we can skip ahead. After 18 I'll go play the hole I skipped when I can find an opening. Not ideal, but if one group is all that is holding you up, make lemonade.

The course overall was too crowded to play through. It may have saved a few minutes in the long run but prob would’ve continued to slow down everyone behind us overall. While the people in front of us were terrible, and slow….there must’ve been another group ahead somewhere with the same problem.

Just overall frustrating to no end.

That's the course's fault then. And that is frustrating. One of my local courses does this. If you call for a tee time, they'll tell you they're booked up. But if you show up, they'll "squeeze you in". An 8 minute gap in tee times becomes 4 minutes and not enough for a group of 4 to ever recover. Do this 4 or 5 times and the entire course is waiting a lot longer.

What course were you at?

We always play ready golf in big groups, It works for us. but on weekends it seems like no matter how fast you play your always waiting behind someone

Houston National…but this has been a common theme regardless of the course.

Any recs around north Houston on ‘affordable’ private courses or are they having all about the same issues as well?

More groups should play scrambles honestly. It’s much more enjoyable, speeds up play, and keeps things competitive if you do 2 v 2.

I agree rounds have gotten slower. The course needs to talk about it more when you check in. Set the expectation and then monitor. If you don’t have an expectation, especially if you’re new to the game, then out of sight out of mind. The round will go forever. Gapping in tee times is huge too. Everyone needs to set a goal of finishing a round in 4 hours or less. 2 players. Then 3 hours.

Prohibit walking during busy times.

A foursome with carts should be able to play a hole in 15 minutes or less no matter how shitty they are.

The only true way to speed up play is to have a legit marshall out there kicking people off the course.

ETA I don’t remember the last time I stayed at a golf course for more than 3.5 hours. I’ll leave if it takes longer than that.

Walking shouldn't be slowing anything down and are probably faster than most carts since each walker can walk to their ball independently. Walkers are much faster if it is cart path only too.

Easiest way to speed up pace of play is for the club to have other sources of revenue. This allows the club to raise prices and space out tee times properly. 8 minutes between starting tines is not enough to avoid backups.
Consumers have dug their own grave. Nobody even thinks to support the golf shop anymore.

At our club, Saturday morning is fairly quick.

Sunday afternoon is insanely slow.

I guarantee you I can play faster walking than most novices in a cart. Actually most walkers know the game and could say the same.

These little nit picky things don’t fix the issue. There needs to be mandatory communication and education by the course prior to novices approaching the 1 tee.

Yep, walk with a foursome almost every weekend. And almost every weekend there is a group of carts behind us that wants to tee off first on the first tee. Every now and then we do let them tee off first if no one is behind them and almost every time, they are waving us in front of them by hole #5 because we are on their heels the entire time.

I’m 100% in favor of speeding up play and agree that slow play has become an issue, but I don’t understand this view. A lot of my buddies are the same way… Why do you guys want to leave the course so bad? I get it’s frustrating to wait but I guess I’m too competitive with myself to ever want to leave before I’ve finished the round. Plus, golf is fun, if it takes longer, it’s still fun…

You’re not a member of a private club? When I lived in Houston I wanted to join champions. They have super strict rules ( at least when Jackie was still around) around pace of play and most everyone out there is very good. I moved shortly after starting that process but it’s easily the place for players.

I think courses could go a long way having a "rules" placard on the first instructing people to paly ready golf.

But you can't do much for crowded courses. Nice weather will always pack the course. I get mine in over the summer in the hottest part of the day. 3 hours tops.

Education:

Play the right tees.

No mulligans. I hate seeing guys hit 3 or 4 balls until they hit a good one.

Let groups through.

Set a max score among the group max double or triple.

Clocks on cart or within apps that alert you if you’re behind a 4 hour pace.

Look, I get that most people are out there to have a good time and enjoy nature blah blah blah. Do all of that on the patio of the club house. Some of us are competing. That’s how I enjoy golf.

People that spend more than a minute looking for a ball or groups that don’t play ready golf are annoying.

This isn’t the masters you don’t need to find every ball and if you can’t afford to lose balls then you need to get cheaper balls or not play.
