resistance heating uses hella electricity. People are also trying to bring the temp difference from 25 to 70 vs in summer trying to bring temp down from 95 to 70.

My usage as your evidence:

Not looking forward to February’s bill. Luckily, I am on levelized billing that will take the sting out. But 300 dollars a month for utilities year round is asinine.

Just turned the heat higher. Most of the lights are on in the house too. Oh well.

Another utility supplies our electricity and I’m so grateful for that. Electricity prices are still high, but at least I have reliable power and I don’t get all these insane fees tacked on by Entergy.

Entergy is a horrible company. The less I have to interact with them, the better.

If they can’t make enough electricity, perhaps they should consider means to generate more. That’s their job. It was 17 degrees at my house yesterday. That’s somewhat rare, but it has happened before and does happen occasionally all over this area.

So Entergy can go frick themselves. This is a scenario that they should be prepared for. Maybe for once they should focus on their own grid instead or lobbying politicians and inventing new bullshite fees to charge customers.

No doubt, but much of what happened during the Texas freeze fiasco was with another company.

Very concise summary of the monopolistic utility business model.

There's essentially zero incentive to do anything beyond the minimum and utilities are rivaled only by the government for their inefficiency and laziness. I've worked with a dozen of them and they're all basically like the DMV.

I’m curious if usage increases alot more once power comes back on

What I mean, ok. Power goes out. Gets colder in your house, the minute it comes back and everyone cranks up their heaters to try to get it back to the temp before the outage this increasing energy usage

Correct. In the 2021 hard freeze, the distribution network in Texas couldn’t handle all the heaters (all-electric, no gas) turning on nearly simultaneously and it continually tripped offline.

If Entergy built a what-if distribution system for every potential problem, the utility bills would be $10K per month for everyone.

Exactly, arms dealer, running the alternate cords from a generator for 15 or30 minutes and then un running them. I guess the power companies have big arse alternative generators.

And we are told by TVA not to call our power providers to see if its a short black our or a long one.

Hate them with a freezing passion

Yes and no. People do individually start to use more, but while there’s a surge it’s not massive because they aren’t turning everyone back on at the same time.

Any Tx bass seeing this issue? It seems like I am seeing issues all over but not in Tx this winter.

I’m not a grid expert, but is it because areas usually share power across the areas with higher need, but right now there isn’t an area with power to share because the cold is dipping so far south?

This is why decentralized power generation/storage interests me greatly. Be it solar panel roof tiles and Tesla batteries or some alternative, I think being able to operate your home when the public grid is at capacity and even being laid to give energy back to the grid sounds wonderful.
