This is why decentralized power generation/storage interests me greatly. Be it solar panel roof tiles and Tesla batteries or some alternative, I think being able to operate your home when the public grid is at capacity and even being laid to give energy back to the grid sounds wonderful.

It’s pretty cool and why I’ve been transitioning my career to focus more on it from utilities and O&G. I’ve been running a solar and storage setup in west Texas for a while now and it’s been off grid for weeks at a time and when the grid is up I sell a crap load back because they let me overbuild.

It’s gotten much colder than this in Louisiana multiple times in the last decade. They never used to do this every time it got a little cold. It’s either their aging shite grid or their increased need to control you.

TVA is doing the same thing. It's the first time in 90 years they've had to do rolling blackouts. Just two years ago they said they had the capacity to sustain -10 degree temperatures. Now we are at 0-15 degrees (depending on where you are) and they can't handle it. Apparently one of their coal and one of their gas plants went offline (not sure why cold temps makes a plant go offline).

Typically it's because either the cooling pond or equipment froze or fuel supply issues (mostly for natural gas).

In the Texas ice storm they had to take a nuclear reactor offline because the cooling equipment was freezing up.

But......but....they have said this is an "unprecedented" and "historic" event!

Generally, when you hear those words, your first thought should be, "For what are they making an excuse?".
