"It's all one ghetto, man. A giant gutter in outer space."

Best television ever. Simply ever. If you disagree, fight me.

It was based of an episode of wishbone from the 90s that they expanded into a full series

This book?

The Conspiracy Against the Human Race (on Goodreads)

From the Vox article, linked below.
quote:

The allegations are that Pizzolatto heavily borrowed lines, like Cohle's "hand-in-hand" line, from the work of horror writer Thomas Ligotti. Jon Padgett, the founder of Thomas Ligotti Online, and Mike Davis, the editor and founder of The Lovecraft eZine website, looked into a few of Pizzolatto's famous lines and compared them to Ligotti's work, Conspiracy Against the Human Race. In an interview on Davis's site, Padgett pointed out a sampling of quotes that could be traced back to Ligotti:

This thread led me down a wormhole that might keep me awake at night.

From that Vox link:

quote:

True Detective:

We became too self-aware. Nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law.

Ligotti

We know that nature has veered into the supernatural by fabricating a creature that cannot and should not exist by natural law, and yet does.

quote:

True Detective:

The only honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming, stop reproducing, and march hand-in-hand into extinction.

Ligotti:

"...the human race will never do the honorable thing and abort itself..."/ "To end this self-deception... we must cease reproducing." / "And how many would speed up the process of extinction once euthanasia was decriminalized and offered in humane and even enjoyable ways?"

I mean these are pretty massive stretches. They're citing an instance of copying based on a single word, which is a common word at that. Pizz may have borrowed some ideas or themes from elsewhre, jsut like pretty much everyone in literature or film does, but I think it's a major stretch to say it's straight up plaigarism based on waht they quote in the link.

because it is.

True Detective season 1 is awesome. ignore the haters. if the original didn't have McConaughey and Woody in it, theres no way it can compare haha.

also Fargo season 1 is really good and reminded me a lot of True Detective.

It's no secret that a conscience
Can sometimes be a pest
It's no secret ambition
Bites the nails of success
Every artist is a cannibal
Every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration
And sing about the grief

Ain’t gonna fight you. It is one of the best. In my all time top five. It sucks badly that the following seasons did not measure up. However, I would rather have that one stellar season than watch that cast/storyline drag on, degenerate and become mediocre. (Yellowstone, I’m looking at you.)

How is it plagiarized? Cohle is an intellectual, well-read, quirky guy who likely quotes literature or takes similar views

Never passed it off as his own...

This is the easy “out.” Rust was very well read and perhaps a big fan of Ligotti’s work. When you’re intellectually aligned with someone else’s philosophy, of course you’re gonna use some of the same language that you were influenced by.

Don't give a shite about the path it took to get created. Glad it got to where it needed to be to make an awesome show.

The writing and acting were unbelievable.

I even remember googling the songs played during each episode.

I bought a couple of Handsome Family CDs without listening to them first, based just upon the theme song.
