Because someone is a good athlete he good should get special or different treatment than his Academy brothers? This place rants about pampered athletes playing "children games" being put on pedestals.
Why should a great athlete get special treatment that other Cadets can't? Athletes are very different or special & should be treated differently is what I'm hearing here.

This is part of the issue with 5000 page spending bills. There isn't a single congressman who knows everything that's in them.

Yeah it's hard to feel sympathy for him when there are dudes who don't get into Annapolis or West Point even with a congressional letter.
For every cadet or midshipmen that attends the academy with a congressional nomination there are nine that don’t get accepted that also have the same nomination.
Only half of the cadets or midshipmen receive a congressional nomination. The rest get their nominations from other sources.
In some ways I agree with your sentiment, b/c the tax payers paid for his education and training. However, I also believe these athletes can be incredible marketing stories for the armed services and the academies when their story is repeated to ad nauseam every Sunday.

agreement by a cadet or midshipman to play professional sport constitutes a breach of service obligation.
Beyond fricking laughable, the hypocrisy of the federal government is out of this world.

The same reason our super smart classmates were able to continue their education by accepting a Rhodes Scholarship or being allowed to attend medical school before fulfilling their service obligations.

Being a little generous with athlete, all BS aside, you would think the government could come up with something with a potential first round pick.

Carter is an exceptional cadet like a Rhodes scholar or a cadet going to med school. If the Army makes exceptions for Rhodes scholars then then they should for a potential first round draft pick. Otherwise why play competitive D1 athletics at the service academies if they won’t allow the rare cadet who is pro material the opportunity to play professionally? It’s delay the commitment, not forgo it

Pretty shitty situation.
Didn't stop Roger Staubach. Why should today's military enlistees be any different?

ESPN has learned w/@TishaESPN that Wisconsin Congressman Mike Gallagher @MikeforWI introduced the amendment that's putting Andre Carter's draft status in flux. His office didn't return requests for comment. Here's Gallagher's reasoning via committee debate:

Congressman Gallagher is correct. He had an opportunity to transfer out and chose not to.

See nothing wrong in his reasoning. They signed a contract, got paid and benefited from prestige and took a spot that is inherently hard to get.
The military gave you a shot when other P5 programs wouldn't, you exceeded your potential, and now you want out? This is the military. You gave up your free will when you signed up to be secure financially for 8-10 years. You can't have your cake and eat it too. You made a choice.

I don’t understand why kids go to these places in the first place.
Did they not see what happened to Pat Tillman? The demons that run this country do not value your lives. Same as any other government.

No it is not. He made a commitment and should be required to stick by it. He could have gotten out after 2 years like any other cadet. This is another example of one of many things wrong in the country. No commitment to you obligations.
I guess the argument is changing the rules mid game on him. He had the option to go to NFL after playing at Army then completing commitment after NFL. Now saying new rules goes into effect immediately and you cant go back in time.

didn't this happen to david robinson when he was in the naval academy? I could swear he went into active service prior to going to the Spurs.

He did. Well I think he was officially in the reserves. His height was a problem. Can you imagine that dude on a submarine?
