Update 12/20 Good for Andre!!
quote:

After an outcry over the future of star Army linebacker Andre Carter II, politicians scrambled to alter the language of a recently passed congressional bill that clears his path to the upcoming NFL draft.

New language formally filed Tuesday morning in a piece of end-of-year legislation will restore the opportunity for Carter and other current academy upperclassmen at Army, Navy and Air Force to defer military service to pursue professional sports.

quote:

A sudden potential roadblock has emerged that could prevent Army star linebacker Andre Carter II and other talented athletes at service academies from playing professional sports directly out of school.

The Military Times has reported that a potential change in the policy for athletes at the academies emerged as part of a bill being passed through Congress. Since 2019, athletes at military academies have had the ability to apply for a waiver to delay their active service requirement and immediately pursue professional sports opportunities.

That rule, pushed through by former President Donald Trump in 2019, appears on the cusp of being revoked. Tucked in Section 553 of the National Defense Authorization Act, which passed the Senate on Thursday and is headed to President Joe Biden's desk, is language that states an "agreement by a cadet or midshipman to play professional sport constitutes a breach of service obligation."

quote:

Heading into this season, Carter's NFL draft potential was one of the feel-good stories in college football. The Black Knights star is Mel Kiper's No. 22-ranked player for the upcoming draft, a stunning development for a school that hasn't had a first-round pick since 1947 and has had only two players drafted since 1969. Carter chose to stay at Army his final two seasons out of loyalty, despite being a player whose talent could command a large sum of money on the name, image and likeness market.

Pretty shitty situation.

If he's gonna be a 1st rounder he should just leave. I'm sure his first contract would be more than enough to cover the $240k he'd have to pay back.

Maybe they will take the clause out. I doubt it though considering how little it comes into play.

Obligatory Airplane gifs.

But seriously, when you sign on the line that is dotted, they knew what they were getting in to...you would expect that due diligence from a service academy player. Roger Staubach couldn't enter the NFL until he was 27 years old.

Yeah it's hard to feel sympathy for him when there are dudes who don't get into Annapolis or West Point even with a congressional letter.

Honest question, is the kid OK with this? Those academy graduates are often times wired differently.

What happens if a service academy player or student transfers? Is it not an obligation until you graduate?

If it's before the start of your junior year no (for West Point, not sure about Navy).

Another one on the list of endless good things Trump did

Whoever inserted this specific language into the bill needs to be outed and shamed.

Give him the waiver. He's getting an education, that's good for the nation. Our personnel system is garbage, losing one academy graduate won't make it crash. It's already a trash heap.

Probably did not foresee himself turning into an NFL-ready player when he went to the academy. Just write it off and cut him loose to enjoy the NFL.

This “he’s wasting a spot” argument doesn’t seem valid to me. It’s not like he was gifted a spot at West Point…he earned it just like everyone else. And those dudes who didn’t get in could all still get commissions through ROTC or OCS if they wanted to. Once you’re active duty, no one cares where you went to become an officer.

No it is not. He made a commitment and should be required to stick by it. He could have gotten out after 2 years like any other cadet. This is another example of one of many things wrong in the country. No commitment to you obligations.

The Army could use this as a win. Make him work as a recruiter in the offseason, or even deploy for short periods of time. A high profile West Point graduate would be more valuable to the country than the labors of one man.
