I know these guys aren’t starters. But how do teams have depth if the 2’s and 3’s continue to constantly leave every year. I know you can grab new players in portal. But that’s new guys learning a new scheme every year. Instead of having possibly a year three guy starting, you will always have new players. Won’t this hurt the product teams are putting on field? Especially in the beginning of the season.

This is the new normal. 3rd or 4th year players sticking around and contributing as jr’s and sr’s will be rare

When kids start to realize that the grass isn’t always greener. Being a backup isn’t a bad thing but society as a whole doesn’t work for anything anymore.

Bama has 13 players in the portal. A&M has 22. Welcome to the new normal.

I think this will be an issue for all teams moving forward. We are just feeling it more right now because of the program status Kelly inherited this team.

It is all relative. Of course we will lose depth. Kelly is do far this year, ahead of the competition in managing the losses. We so far have not lost it at a position of great need, and we are retention is a TON better than last year when we lost two starting CBs, a potential starting RB.

I do agree, the loss of Hill and Dumerville is frustrating as they likely would've been in the rotation 2023 if we have any injuries.

The do so by working the portal that these kids are leaving for. Do you think kids go to the portal but no kids transfer in?

Xavier Hill, Garrett Dellinger, and Miles Frazier are all in the same classification. He wouldn't start here unless they go pro after next year or the next and he uses his Covid year. A lot of guys aren't going to chance that.

The portal is a 2 way street. As we lose, we can gain. I trust BK will field a competitive team. He’s also barely had a year under his belt so I’m sure he’s still in the process of making this roster his own. In that process, players from the old guard will fall off

This is a major issue for us and is being discounted by just about everyone.

This team lacked depth this year and now we have far more to replace/fill in than people understand.

Look at 247 Roster Composite for this year. 247 roster composite

We had 72 players on the roster that were rated with 3 stars or above. 72! Damn near every quality team has 83-85.

Go through that list and you will see you have to drop all the way down to West Virginia to see a team that has fewer than 72.

Yes we have great talent but we lack depth big time. Now we have to replace not only the 13 legitimate players that we did not have this year, but we also have to replace the Seniors, NFL guys and the transfers.

This is a much bigger problem than just saying "everyone is facing the same problem."

No, we are starting from a much different spot than everyone else.

It's close to the point that we will not have an O-line rotation next year. We'll have 5 starters and one or two backups that can rotate around during injuries.

Brian Kelly has destroyed the depth of this team!

Not for long. There will be other big time players filling the void coming in their vacated spots.

Portal has been terrible so far imo. Anyone that isnt starting immediately is usually off to somewhere else. I do agree with players sticking around a program 3 years being able to leave and play immediately. But fresmen leaving at the end of their First year is just ridiculous. Depth is always going to be tough to have under current conditions

Eventually, everyone will end up where they are supposed to be. Live by the portal, die by the portal. Complain about it all you want, but this is the new reality - portal, infinite transfers, NIL - this is "modern" college football.

Where have you been this season? Did you not see what Kelly did with this failure of a roster. Built from little to win the West! It will only get better.

Portal gains are also affecting depth, and it will be net positive.

I find it comical that for the most part backups leave one program to become backups at another program. We were an exception last year where we had a depleted roster so transfers could come in and start. That’s not the norm
